How it works

  • The movie and TV rankings represent the most up-to-date Tomatometer scores as of December 31, 2023.
  • All the lists on the Golden Tomato Awards are ordered by an adjusted score formula, which is a weighted ranking that compensates for the variation in the number of reviews when comparing movies or TV shows.
  • Limited releases are defined as opening in fewer than 600 theaters at initial release, or as virtual cinema. Platform releases, or movies initially released in fewer than 600 theaters that later expand, are categorized as Wide Release.
  • Foreign releases are defined as non-English language films.
  • In order to qualify for a Golden Tomato Award, a movie must have been released in the United States between January 1 and December 31, 2023, and it must have at least 40 reviews. All eligible seasons and TV movies must have premiered or ended in the 2023 calendar year, and have a minimum of 20 reviews from different critics for the season or its episodes. All contenders need to have at least 5 reviews by Top Critics.

2023 Fall TV Survey

The season’s most anticipated TV and streaming shows and movies — according to Rotten Tomatoes users.

Hollywood is feeling the hurt as striking writers and actors struggle to reach agreements with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers trade group representing major studios. For consumers, the result is fewer entertainment options this fall as negotiations trudge on — or don’t, as we’ve seen since the strikes began with the Writers Guild of America’s stance in early May. Actors’ union SAG-AFTRA followed, beginning its strike in July.

Networks have scrambled to adjust their fall lineups, leaning heavily on reality programming, and streamers may be stretching out their premiere dates for content that was in post-production. Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye spin-off Echo, for instance, was only just moved to 2024 by Disney+ (and upset our survey results for New Fall Shows). Some titles have seen their seasons split; FX’s American Horror Story: Delicate part 1, for one, arrives on September 21, and part 1 of Netflix’s Virgin River season 5 arrives September 7. Even films are getting in on the action with Zack Snyder’s space opera Rebel Moon now divided into two films, the first arriving on December 22.

Rotten Tomatoes has pulled together categorized lists of titles confirmed for September through December release for our annual fall TV and streaming survey. The lists include our annual polling on returning series, new series, and TV and streaming movies. This year, we’ve added categories for reality shows and documentary-style and news programming to spotlight a few more of your viewing options (even though titles in those categories are less likely to receive Tomatometer scores).

Read on to find out which fall shows and TV and streaming movies our readers are most looking forward to this season. – Debbie Day

2022 Fall TV Survey

The season’s most anticipated TV and streaming shows and movies — according to Rotten Tomatoes users.

The fall TV season is shaping up to be a hot one, as shows returning for a new season build their fan bases and new shows based on familiar stories take center stage. We may be spending more time outside our homes than we were this time last year, but if the pandemic taught us anything, it’s how to make time for binge-watching our favorites.

We surveyed over 1,000 Rotten Tomatoes users to find out what you’re most looking forward to watching this fall. In the responses to our survey, a wide range of shows made our most-anticipated list; from highly-anticipated titles that launched in summer but whose episodes sprawl into fall like The House of the Dragon, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and new seasons of creepy horror and dystopian shows like The Handmaid’s Tale, Chucky, and American Horror Story to returning family favorites like Young Sheldon and animated Star Wars: The Bad Batch and brand-new series like Wednesday, fantasy film spin-off Willow, and live-action Star Wars series Andor.

In the pages that follow, we also give you a glimpse at how responses from men stacked up against responses from women – with predictable results and that we will henceforth refer to as “The Bridgerton Divide.” Unlike the main lists, the men/women results noted ahead are based on total responses to our survey, not just those who self-identify as Rotten Tomatoes users. The survey was conducted by our in-house research group, which ensures that our surveys reach a sample of people across race, ethnicity, gender, and economic status to reflect the U.S. population based on census data and similar measures. Respondents were asked to self-identify in a gender question that included an option for non-binary; however, the number of responses from those identifying as non-binary was too small to adequately represent the segment here.

And, finally, this survey was conducted in August, so while we tried to account for shows and movies that were expected in the fall, there were some titles that simply didn’t have enough information available about their release to include them; for instance, a number of Netflix movies whose dates were announced after our survey wrapped — including Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio (December 9), Luckiest Girl Alive (October 7), The Good Nurse (October 26), and All Quiet on the Western Front (October 28) — and “top returning shows” write-in favorite Ted Lasso, though we still don’t know if season 3 of the sports comedy is in play for this fall.

Read on to find out more about which returning fall 2022 TV shows and new series our readers are most looking forward to.
