It certainly had its moments, and was unquestionably better than "Superman III" and "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace," but last year’s franchise reboot "Superman Returns" was far from perfect. There was the occasionally leaden pacing, for one thing, not to mention the glaring lack of a super-powered villain to test Superman’s mettle (and light up the screen with some rock ’em sock ’em action).
As Brandon Routh recently told Empire, however, the latter problem may very well be addressed in the series’ next installment:
"In the first one, the obstacle was Superman’s love for Lois and his son, and Luthor using that against him. I just know that in the next film there will be a lot of action and I’m gonna get to fight something, or someone. An enemy with real physical power might be worked in there, definitely."
(Might be…definitely? He’s either practicing for a career in politics or he’s been listening to a lot of old Oasis.)
Routh went on to scoff at rumors of an appearance in the sequel by beloved "Superman II" villain General Zod ("I don’t know how much we want to reprise characters that have appeared in the series before") and crack wise about a lack of consensus regarding the next film’s title ("I suggested…’Superman Returns Again,’ but I don’t think that will happen.") It’s still very early, though; with Bryan Singer setting the sequel aside for oter projects, who knows how soon Routh will don the cape again.
