Just two days before the Oscars are announced, the Razzies have splattered green Rottenness all over awards season with the announcement of the nominations for the 40th Golden Raspberry Awards.
The annual awards honor – erm, skewer – the movies deemed to be the worst of the year, and the performances, directors, and writers that made them so bad. One of the big Razzies players this year is, not surprisingly, Cats, Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s smash musical, which received a total of eight nominations. (So, one life left, we guess?).
Cats is nominated for Worst Picture alongside The Fanatic, The Haunting of Sharon Tate, A Madea Family Funeral, and Rambo: Last Blood. The big-budget musical also picked up two nods for Worst Supporting Actress – including for Dame Judi Dench, how dare they?! – and double nods again in the Worst Screen Combo category, one of which is for “Jason Derulo and His CGI-Neutered ‘Bulge.'”
Two other films share the dishonor of joining Cats with eight nominations each: Rambo: Last Blood and A Madea Family Funeral. The remake of Hellboy (five nominations), Hilary Duff horror vehicle The Haunting of Sharon Tate (four nominations), and the Fred Durst-directed John Travolta-starring thriller, The Fanatic (four nominations), also scored big among the nominees.
Interestingly, you’ll find a few of the nominees on our list of 2019 Rotten Movies We Love, including Cats – seriously, that furry trip as watchable as hell – and the flick with the year’s most bats–t twist, Serenity.
For the second year in a row, the Razzies have a Razzie Redeemer award, given to a former nominee who’s had a remarkably good year. This year’s nominees are Adam Sandler, Jennifer Lopez, Eddie Murphy, Will Smith, and Keanu Reeves.
The Golden Raspberry nominees are chosen by more than 1,000 Voting Razzie Members, who each select their top five picks in 10 categories. The winners will be announced at a date to be determined: check in at the Razzies.com for more info.
