“I rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey, and reminds us to cherish every moment because they’ll never come again.” These immortal words, spoken by Sir Patrick Stewart‘s Jean Luc-Picard in Star Trek Generations, couldn’t be more true about the man who said it. Stewart died Thursday after a brief battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia, according to a post on his official Instagram page.

One of the most monumental actors of his era, Stewart leaves behind a legacy of iconic film and television characters that spans generations. Some knew him as the courageous captain who always figured out how to escape sticky situations when he played Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Others will never forget the life lessons and guidance he shared as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise, and how he became a widespread viral meme when he was cast as the poop emoji in The Emoji Movie. There was no question: Stewart was an actor with boundless range and endless talent.

Stewart started his career on stage, becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966 and making his broadway debut as Snout in a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. During this period, he began getting brief roles in several major British television series, including Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Fall of Eagles, and Smiley’s People. He would also appear in a few films, such as David Lynch’s Dune, John Boorman’s Excalibur, and Tobe Hooper’s Lifeforce.

But his big television break came from taking on the lead role in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The “unknown British Shakespearean actor,” as he was referred to in the Los Angeles Times, would become known all over the world as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and lead the Star Trek revival into massive success, becoming the first syndicated show to be Emmy-nominated for Best Dramatic Series. In 2020, Stewart would reprise his role as Picard in the Paramount+ show Star Trek: Picard, bringing new layers and nuance to his beloved character.

After the conclusion of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Stewart would continue to have a rich career in television, including getting a Lead Actor in a Miniseries Emmy nomination for Moby Dick, but he struggled to make a permanent leap to films… until he took on the role as Charles Xavier in X-Men. Just like with Star Trek, Stewart brought a level of gravitas to a normally hokey genre, grounding the story in a way that resonated with audiences. The success of the first film spawned several sequels, and Stewart would return to reprise his roles in X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Logan. He also appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Avengers: Doomsday.

Despite being known for his dramatic work, Stewart was also adept at comedy, appearing in such classics as Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Frasier, Ted, and Extras (which garnered him another Emmy nomination). And the only thing more iconic than Stewart’s on-screen roles may have been his voice, given his extensive voiceover work in American Dad!, The Prince of Egypt, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, Chicken Little, and The Sheep Detectives.

With such a long and illustrious career, compiling all of Stewart’s films and television shows would be a colossal task. But in the words of Picard, “Things are only impossible until they are not.” So we are gathering all of Stewart’s work and ranking them by Tomatometer.
