If we could pick just one word to describe this week in movies, TV, and cultural events it would be: magical.

That’s exactly how it’s going to feel to watch MLB at Field of Dreams, a special baseball game where the iconic sports movie was filmed. And if you look up “movie magic” in the dictionary, you’ll find The End of Oak Street, a new blockbuster starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor about a family who discovers that their suburban home has been transported to a world occupied by dinosaurs. Then there’s Lanterns, a live-action Green Lantern adaptation that fuses the real world with the cosmos. Plus, Disney’s D23 takes place this weekend (with select events available on streaming), celebrating the magic at the core of Disney stories that have kept fans engaged for decades.

For the week of August 13 to 19, here are the five movies, TV shows, and events that will have everyone talking.

The End of Oak Street

When to watch: August 14
Where to watch: In theaters

The year of Anne Hathaway continues at the box office this week, and not only does the actress seem to be everywhere in 2026, it also seems that she’s hitting up every possible movie genre. First was psychological thriller Mother Mary, then workplace dramedy The Devil Wears Prada 2, which was, of course, followed by Christopher Nolan’s historical epic, The Odyssey. Next up, she’s venturing into family-oriented sci-fi/adventure with The End of Oak Street — and she’s bringing Ewan McGregor with her.

Directed by David Robert Mitchell (It Follows) and produced by J.J. Abrams, the movie takes place after a weird cosmic event transports the titular suburban Oak Street to a mysterious location. As if that weren’t alarming enough, this new place is inhabited by dinosaurs — think Jurassic Park without the actual park. When the Platt family (including Hathaway, McGregor, and their two children) realizes this, they must figure out how to survive in their new surroundings.

The End of Oak Street has a little something for everyone: do-or-death thrills, a little gore, family bonding, escapist fantasy, and a sense of wonder that makes movie magic feel like real magic. First reviews are calling the flick “the biggest surprise of the summer,” and say that it delivers on throwback vibes and big-screen-worthy excitement. You’re going to watch it on a big screen surrounded by people.

Lanterns

When to watch: August 16. New episodes drop weekly on Sundays.
Where to watch: HBO & HBO Max

James Gunn’s DCU could use a pick-me-up after both the ending of Peacemaker Season 2 and Supergirl disappointed fans and critics alike. Lanterns hopes to be just that, and expectations are especially high because it’s taking over HBO’s much-obsessed-over Sunday night primetime spot.

Co-created by Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen), Lanterns is inspired by the Green Lantern comics (which fans have been wanting a decent live-action adaptation of since Ryan Reynolds2011 version also disappointed) and presents as a buddy-cop series with a cosmic twist. The series follows two intergalactic cops (aka “Lanterns” who wear rings that give them special powers): veteran Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). The pair are tasked with investigating a murder in a rural town, which is actually a disguised extraterrestrial incident that thrusts them into something bigger and much more serious than expected.

The show will be connected to the broader DCU ( Guy Gardner, Nathan Fillion’s Lantern from Superman, will appear), so fans are going to want to follow along. But the creative team behind Lanterns has also said they want it to feel like a prestigious HBO show, one that has some grit and is grounded in emotion. We’ll see if they succeed in that task, but for the crowd that just wants some quality, appointment-viewing TV on Sunday night, this is a promising start.

MLB at Field of Dreams

When to watch: August 13. Coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. ET, first pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
Where to watch: Netflix

Field of Dreams became a beloved part of the baseball movie canon when it came out in 1989, and the MLB is making sure to keep that legacy alive. MLB at Field of Dreams is a one-off (and charming) sports x movie crossover, bringing professional ball players to the actual site of the movie to play a game. Facing off in the diamond: the Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins

This is actually the third time the MLB has hosted a Field of Dreams game (there was one in 2021 and 2022), but this time is set to be even more special. Since the 2022 edition, the baseball facility in Iowa has gone through major upgrades, bringing it closer to the vibe of iconic ballparks across the country. (But the cornfield magic from the movie, which follows a farmer who builds a baseball diamond for the ghosts of legendary players, remains palpable.) The game will also be available to stream exclusively on Netflix, making it easier for a wider audience to actually watch. Plus both the Phillies and Twins are in the thick of the playoff race, so the game also has a level of stakes attached, meaning some darn good baseball awaits.

D23

When to watch: August 14–16
Where to watch: Disney+

In recent years, Disney has turned D23, its annual fan celebration, into a Comic-Con-level event. If you’re not there, you’re probably scrolling through all the news, panel clips, and whispers of advanced screenings with tremendous FOMO. This year, the company is streaming select panels and presentations on Disney+

MCU fans are hopeful for more Doomsday crumbs and that new X-Men cast members joining Sadie Sink will be announced — and we’ll be covering all the news on Rotten Tomatoes — but here’s what’s actually confirmed to be streaming this weekend. On August 14 at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT, catch a celebration of the 35th anniversary of the animated Beauty and the Beast. On August 15, watch in on a panel about Percy Jackson Season 3 (6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT), the Disney Rewind Encore Concert (a performance of throwback Disney songs at 9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT), and a showcase about all of the special experiences in the works at Disney Parks around the world hosted by Neil Patrick Harris (10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT). And on August 16, check out streams of Disney Worldbuilders, a discussion between creatives like Jon Favreau, Kevin Feige, and Dave Filoni (1:15 p.m. ET/10:15 a.m. PT), and the Disney Legends Award Ceremony, which will honor stars like Anne Hathaway, Dwayne Johnson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and The Jonas Brothers (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).

Camp Rock 3

When to watch: August 13 at 8 p.m. ET
Where to watch: Disney Channel. Next-day streaming on Disney+.

With Camp Rock 3, The Jonas Brothers have revived their hit aughts-era Disney Channel Original Movie franchise, reprising their roles as the fictional band Connect 3. In this new musical sequel (and the first since 2010’s Camp Rock 2), they return to the familiar comforts of Camp Rock because the opening act for their tour has just dropped out, and they’re hoping one of the musically-gifted campers can fill the spot.

For younger millennials and older Gen Zs, the mere existence of Camp Rock 3 strikes right at the heart of nostalgia. It immediately transports fans back to what they would call the heights of Disney Channel movies, pop-rock tunes, and carefree summers. To amplify that feeling, OG Camp Rock star Demi Lovato is also a producer on the movie, and even makes a cameo (a surprise, as Lovato has really scaled back her acting work since her Disney days and medical struggles). But it’s not all dripping in nostalgia — a younger crop of Disney stars, like Limani Segura and Malachi Barton, have joined the cast, refreshing the franchise for the younger generation too. Grab your kids, your younger cousins, or your high school besties, and sing along while revelling in the memories.
