The Schwartz awakens in 2027. One of Amazon’s most entertaining presentations on Wednesday came in the form of the decades-later sequel to the 1987 Mel Brooks sci-fi spoof Spaceballs. Officially dubbed Spaceballs: The New One, the new film brought out director Josh Greenbaum and original stars Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga, as well as new additions Josh Gad, Pullman’s son Lewis, and, via video, Keke Palmer. But the highlight was the appearance of Dark Helmet himself, Rick Moranis, who came out escorted by a number of Spaceball security guards.

The group got plenty of laughs with their banter before debuting some first-look footage, depicting Schwartz battles, lots of jokes, and a jab at Avatar. We learned the film will open on April 23, 2027, before ending the presentation with “May the Scwhartz be with you.”

The Masters of the Universe Director and Stars Grant the Power of Grayskull to the Audience

One of the bigger movies still left on Amazon’s slate this year is Masters of the Universe, the new big screen adaptation of the 1980s fantasy superhero franchise. To hype up the crowd for the film, the studio passed out foam versions of He-Man’s sword to the audience, then brought out director Travis Knight and stars Camila Mendes and Nicholas Galitzine.

After a few brief statements, the trio told the audience to raise their swords and proclaim in unison, “By the power of Grayskull, I have the power!” They then debuted a new clip from the upcoming film, which showed Galitzine’s Adam fleeing from a monster before being rescued by Mendes’ Teela, followed by shots of Adam’s home planet, Eternia. The clip then transitioned into a teaser for the film, showing more of its humor and action, including a bit of He-Man squaring off against Skeletor. Masters of the Universe opens in theaters on June 5.

David Leitch and Pete Davidson Present How to Rob a Bank

At one point in Amazon’s presentation, audience members were treated to a chaotic scene with stuntmen riding bikes, performing parkour, and tossing out cash, before a teaser for the film How to Rob a Bank played on the screen. The film, whose plot had been something of a mystery to this point, revolves around a group of criminals led by Nicholas Hoult who rob banks (of course) and post the footage to YouTube, with an FBI agent played by John C. Reilly and a hacker played by Zoë Kravitz on their trail.

Director David Leitch (The Fall Guy) and star Pete Davidson emerged on stage to talk about the film, with Leitch clarifying that the robbers are “regular people” who serve as “modern-day Robin Hoods, taking from the rich and giving to the poor.” Davidson added that the action flick “is totally f–king insane,” before co-stars Anna Sawai and a very blonde Hoult appeared on screen in a video to talk about the movie. How to Rob a Bank releases on September 4.

Day 3 – Universal Studios, Focus Features

Not to be outdone by Warner Bros. the night before, Universal and Focus made sure to bring plenty of star power of their own, and arguably the biggest name they invited was living legend Steven Spielberg, who appeared at CinemaCon for the first time to close out the whole presentation and promote his upcoming film Disclosure Day.

One of the film’s stars, Colman Domingo, arrived on stage to introduce Spielberg, who was met with a standing ovation and began with a speech about the power of movies and the moviegoing experience. Spielberg also stated that this wouldn’t be his last CinemaCon and commended NBCUniversal head Donna Langley for her commitment to a 45-day theatrical window, but urged her to go further with a 60-day or even 120-day window.

Then Domingo and Spielberg sat down for a Q&A session, during which Spielberg talked about choosing the right collaborators — “One of the most important things I can do as a director is get the casting right.” He explained where his passion for film came from and described hiding in a bathroom during a Universal Studios tour when he was young so that he could wander the sets alone.

Spielberg went on to reveal he was inspired to return to the sci-fi genre in 2017 when he read about a fighter pilot who had spotted an unidentified flying object, which made him speculate once again what the first meeting between humans and aliens would be like. After doing more research, he was more certain than ever that there is life beyond Earth, and he feels like there is more fact than fiction in the film. “This movie is going to answer questions, but it’s also going to ask a lot of questions,” he said. “All you need to get from the beginning to the end is a seatbelt.”

The presentation ended with new footage from the film that offered more context for the characters played by Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, and Domingo, revealing that the trio maybe connected to the alien invasion in the film and that their goal is to disclose their findings to the world. Disclosure Day opens in theaters on June 12.

Christopher Nolan Presents His IMAX Epic The Odyssey

Earlier in Universal’s presentation, right after Snoop Dogg kicked everything off with a live performance and the announcement of a biopic of his life (more on that later), celebrated writer-director Christopher Nolan took to the stage to thunderous applause to present his next film, The Odyssey.

Nolan explained that he wanted to adapt Homer’s epic poem because the story “has fascinated audiences for 3,000 years. It’s not a story, it’s the story.” Ever since he first experienced IMAX as a child at science museums, he has wanted to tell a large-scale epic story in the format, and to that end, he approached IMAX about shooting this film, and that prompted them to develop new tech to make it possible. This is the first film ever to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras, utilizing both 70mm and 30mm film to do so.

Nolan also hyped up the immense all-star cast he assembled for the film, joking that it was easier to say who’s not in it than to say who is. That said, Matt Damon (Odysseus), Anne Hathaway (Penelope, Odysseus’ wife), and Tom Holland’s (Telemachus, Odysseus’ son) characters are the core of the film, as it is ultimately a story about family.

Nolan ended the presentation by stating the film is almost finished and introducing an intense clip depicting Damon’s Odysseus leading the legendary Trojan horse attack, followed by various scenes from the rest of the film. The Odyssey lands in theaters on July 17.

Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro Debut Trailer for Focker-In-Law

Ben Stiller began Universal’s presentation of Focker-In-Law with some on-brand self deprecation: “I’m the actor who’s not in The Odyssey.” After joking that he was “officially the De Niro of the franchise” now, Robert De Niro himself walked out to a standing ovation and responded, “Don’t say that. That’s very disrespectful.”

The pair bantered for a bit, ribbing each other and comparing their characters, with De Niro lamenting the fact that he hasn’t been nominated for an Oscar for the role before turning to the audience and clarifying, “I didn’t write this.” De Niro also notes that Ariana Grande’s character “is the new De Niro,” before the two finished up by debuting the brand new trailer. Focker-In-Law opens on November 25.
