New Clips from Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse

Sony ended the first day of studio presentations with a bang, making big announcements and offering new information on everything from horror to anime to book and video game adaptations, but Spider-Man remains the ace up its sleeve. Sony chairman Tom Rothman was on hand to present Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31, 2026), boasting about the trailer’s record-setting 1 billion views in one week and debuting two new posters before introducing star Tom Holland via video.
Holland called the film the “most emotional” and “grown-up” installment yet and debuted a new clip. In the clip, Peter Parker encounters his old friend Ned (Jacob Batalon), who doesn’t recognize him, and follows him to a party, where he discovers Ned is fascinated by Spider-Man and wants to thank him for saving him in high school. At the party, Peter also “meets” MJ (Zendaya), introducing himself as “Maynard,” and discovers she has a boyfriend when she kisses him right in front of Peter. That’s where the clip ends, so we’ll just have to wait until July 31 to see how it all shakes out.

Later, during the Sony Pictures Animation segment, writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (whose Project Hail Mary is rocking theaters right now) and directors Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson took the stage to preview our first look at Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Funnily enough, they also called this the “most emotional” Spider-Verse film so far and hinted at unlikely allies.
Set at the very beginning of the film, the clip picks up right where we left off at the end of Across the Spider-Verse, with Miles tied to a punching bag and facing down his Uncle Aaron and the Earth-42 Miles, aka The Prowler. The two Miles banter back and forth before our Miles, taking a page from the first film, quips, “Don’t watch the mouth, watch the hands,” electrifies the room to escape. We get glimpses of Gwen, Spider-Ham, and some new animation styles, because what is a Spider-Verse movie without stunning animation? Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is slated to open on June 18, 2027.
Weapons Director Zach Cregger Offers First Look at Resident Evil Reboot

Another highlight of the Sony presentation was writer-director Zach Cregger’s reboot of popular video game franchise Resident Evil. Cregger explained that he was a huge fan of the games, putting “an embarrassing amount” of time into them, and threw his name in the ring to direct the new film, hoping to bring it more in line with the spirit of the source material than its previous iteration. He also brought a clip to give fans a taste of what’s to come.
The scene opens on star Austin Abrams (the junkie from Weapons), who enters an abandoned house and attempts to use a phone that doesn’t work. We see bodies of different shapes moving in the shadows, a frozen corpse, and zombies throwing themselves off of buildings, while a dial tone hums in the background. It’s striking footage, and based on Cregger’s previous work, this looks like a promising new direction for the series. Resident Evil is set to open in theaters on September 18, 2026.

Sony Bets Big on Video Games – Zelda, Bloodborne, Helldivers, and Jumanji
Aside from Resident Evil, Sony’s slate has a lot for gamers to look forward to. The studio announced that their Legend of Zelda film has wrapped production and that it will be released on May 7, 2027. They also announced a film adaptation of the popular “Soulslike” video game Bloodborne (if you know, you know), which will be an R-rated animated feature. No release date on that one yet.
Then, Justin “Fast and Furious” Lin took the stage to talk about his upcoming adaptation of Helldivers, the first-person sci-fi shooter that takes heavy inspiration from the film Starship Troopers. Lin noted the game’s popularity (24 million copies sold, with 2.4 million active players a week) and touted the game’s satirical edge. He also emphasized the themes of the film and noted that star Jason Momoa was “the only guy who can pull this off.”

And even though it’s not technically based on a video game, we’re going to talk about Sony’s presentation of the next Jumanji film, which was announced with an official title: Jumanji: Open World. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black surprised the audience by taking the stage to talk about the third installment of the action franchise. After a bit of raucous banter, they explained that they each had to portray three different characters in this film, shouted out the late Robin Williams, and revealed an Easter egg for fans to look out for: one of the original dice from the 1995 Jumanji appears in every scene of the movie.
Then the trio introduced the first trailer for Open World, which picks up directly after the events of Jumanji: The Next Level, when a repairman accidentally activated the game and brought it into the real world. We see Johnson’s Dr. Bravestone in the real world, but with a thick accent, while animals run amok in the city. All of the original kids are back, as well as the in-game avatars (Johnson, Hart, Black, and Karen Gillan), who are now stuck running around the real world. Jumanji: Open World releases on Christmas Day, 2026.
