Sunday night at the MTV Video Music Awards, Indiana Jones 4 co-star Shia LaBeouf made the long-awaited, Spielberg-approved announcement; just what will the dashing adventurer find himself in hot pursuit of in the fourth installment of the Indiana Jones saga? Here’s the title: Indiana Jones and the…

…Kingdom of the Crystal Skull!

Yup, that’s apparently the official title of the next Indy adventure. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Soak it in…now, what’s that mean for the story?

Well, the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull title has been kicking around for a little while as one of six potential titles for the 2008 flick. (Back in August, a Slashfilm scooper uncovered the titles as registered by Lucasfilm with the MPAA.) As with the other five possibles, Crystal Skull refers to a pre-existing myth; this one involves 13 skulls carved from crystal quartz, hidden all over the world and thought to possess mystical powers. Five of these skulls have allegedly been found in real life. Will Professor Jones find the rest??

Of the potential titles, Crystal Skull wasn’t exactly the fan favorite. Indiana Jones and…The Lost City of Gold…The Destroyer of Worlds…The City of Gods…The Fourth Corner of the World…The Quest For The Covenant…nearly all of the alternatives sound cooler. But we’ll have a while to wait to see how the new title, and the corresponding plot, will sound.

Director Spielberg is currently filming Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull with LaBeouf, Harrison Ford, Ray Winstone, Cate Blanchett, and returning fan favorite Karen Allen for a May 22, 2008 release.
