Best Sword-and-Sandal Movies to Watch
From Biblical tales to mythological adaptations of worlds far and away, the sword-and-sandal genre has delivered epic stories on the big screen since the earliest days of cinema. While the oldest examples date back to the silent era, it gained significant popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, when filmmakers went big and established the familiar style we’ve come to associate with the genre.
One of the first true instances of this is found in Cecil B. DeMille’s 1956 Biblical epic The Ten Commandments, which is grand in its depiction of a time so distant from our own and feels almost spiritual in its execution. Ambitious, sprawling, and full of mythical and religious themes that still resonate despite its age, DeMille’s film is one of the most astonishing achievements not only in the sword-and-sandal genre, but in filmmaking as a whole.
Just a few years later in 1959 came William Wyler’s Ben-Hur, which features a chariot race so technically impressive that it changed what was deemed possible in cinema, while at the same time telling a universal story of humanity and individual triumph.
After the cinematic achievements of these standard-bearers, other classics followed, including Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s Cleopatra, Desmond Davis’ Clash of the Titans and John Mililus’ Conan the Barbarian, among others.
The new millennium brought us modern entries like Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, Zack Snyder’s 300, and Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy, which might feel more populist than some of the religious films in the genre, but they’ve got the requisite swords and sandals, sweeping landscapes, and impressive set pieces to prove their pedigree.
The films listed below vary across several time periods and distant worlds, but in addition to featuring plenty of swords and sandals, they are all set in antiquity and find their origins in either Biblical stories, historical events, or mythological tales. It’s not an exhaustive list of every movie — many of these stories have been adapted multiple times, after all — but we included the most noteworthy titles. And while not every entry in the genre is a triumph, they all strive to offer spectacle, storytelling, and frequently jaw-dropping feats of filmmaking for moviegoers looking for a bit of escapism.
