Son of Zorn and 5 Must-See 2016 Animated Series

by | September 9, 2016 | Comments

Between The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers, Sunday nights on Fox feel like Saturday mornings for cartoon-loving adults. And that continues this fall with Son of Zorn (previews on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 8/7C), a half-animated/half-live-action sitcom about a He-Man-y barbarian warrior (voiced by Jason Sudeikis) who comes back to California to reconnect with his ex-wife (Cheryl Hines) and their teenage son.

But not every cool cartoon is on Fox. Here are five other animated shows you should watch after the kiddies go night-night.

 BoJack Horseman: Season 3 (2016) 100%

BoJack Horseman at Netflix

What It’s About: Set in a world where people and anthropomorphic animals live together, this follows the former star of the (fictional) ’90s sitcom Horsin’ Around as he tries to revive his career. Suffice it to say, this ends up being a rather scathing indictment of Hollywood…and horses.

Voiced By: Will Arnett, Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, Paul F. Thompkins, Aaron Paul

Where Does It Air: Netflix

Why You Should Watch: For once, Hollywood isn’t afraid to call out horses for being asses.

Fun Fact: The character Tom Jumbo-Grumbo, a blue whale who’s a pundit on MSNBSea, is voiced by former MSNBC pundit Keith Olbermann.

Rick and Morty 94%

What It’s About: A very loose parody of Back to the Future, this sci-fi comedy follows a brilliant scientist (Rick) and his not-so-brilliant grandson (Morty) as they travel the galaxy, and alternate dimensions, looking for good times and bad influences.

Voiced By: Justin Roiland, Sarah Chalke, Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammer

Where Does It Air: Season 3’s 2016 premiere date is yet to be announced; previous season episodes air at various times on Adult Swim (see the schedule)

Why You Should Watch: This show gets exceptionally clever concocting ways to mess with your mind and reality.

Fun Fact: Rick and Morty was co-created by Dan Harmon, who is responsible for the live-action sitcom Community.

Star Wars Rebels: Season 3 (2016) 100%

Star Wars Rebels (Lucasfilm via Getty Images)

What It’s About: Set a few years before A New Hope and the upcoming Rogue One, this action-packed ‘toon follows a rebel cell in the formative years of the Rebellion. Besides running afoul of Darth Vader, this also brings back familiar faces from the movies as well as from the previous cartoon, The Clone Wars.

Voiced By: Freddie Prinze, Jr., Taylor Gray, Vanessa Marshall, Tiya Sircar, Steven Blum

Where Does It Air: Season 3 premieres Saturday, Sept. 24; airs Saturdays, 8:30/7:30 C on Disney XD

Why You Should Watch: Because things that happen in this cartoon are canon, and thus part of the larger story told by the movies the books, the comics and the games.

Fun Fact: The new season of Rebels will feature General Admiral Thrawn, a fan favorite character originally introduced in a much-loved (but now disavowed) trilogy of novels.

TEEN TITANS GO! (2016)

Teen Titans Go! - Robin (Cartoon Network)

What It’s About: Unlike the previous Teen Titans cartoon, which was a serious and action-packed adventure for the titular superheroes, Go! shows what Robin, Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy and Cyborg do when they stop fighting crime and start arguing with each other over which are better: burgers or burritos.

Voiced By: Scott Menville, Hynden Walch, Khary Payton, Tara Strong, Greg Cipes

Where Does It Air: New episodes premiere weekly on Thursdays at 6/5C

Why You Should Watch: We need something other than the Deadpool movie to take the piss out of all the why-so-serious superhero movies and TV shows.

Fun Fact: On the show, Raven is obsessed with the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic–like cartoon Pretty Pretty Pegasus. In real life, Raven is voiced by Strong, the voice of Twilight Sparkle on My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.

Archer: Season 7 (2016) 100%

What It’s About: Like The Office if it was about MI6, and James Bond, Q and M were self-involved, stupid and had addictive personalities, this follows the titular secret agent as he tries to save the world and get laid… but not necessarily in that order.

Voiced By: H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Jessica Walter, Chris Parnell, Judy Greer, Amber Nash, Lucky Yates, Adam Reed

Where Does It Air: Season 7 finale aired in June on FX, but catch seasons 1-4 on demand or 1-6 on Hulu; the show also airs late nights on FXX and Cartoon Network

Why You Should Watch: Because Archer is the most intricately and cleverly written show since, well, The Simpsons.

Fun Fact: The original star of Archer was a velociraptor. Seriously.
