Wow. I’ve seen some big "marketing pushes" in my time, but this kinda takes the take. Looks like "Spider-Man" is about to overtake New York City in a very big way … all in an effort to get YOU to see a movie you were probably going to see anyway.
April 30th to May 6th will be "Spider-Man Week" in New York City, which means that wherever you happen to roam in the Big Apple, you’ll be overwhelmed an inundated with non-stop "Spider-Man 3" promotional events. And the whole thing will culminate in a big, swanky premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival that you probably couldn’t get tickets for even if you were willing to spend 100 bucks.
Here’s a rundown of Spidey’s events: "Spider-Man Week in NYC begins on Monday, April 30, with a cast appearance and street festival in the Today Show plaza at Rockefeller Center. The week continues with Spider-Man-themed programs offered through partnerships with the Tribeca Film Festival, and dozens of the city’s cultural institutions and tourist attractions, including a special volunteer day for children through the Little Apple Heroes program, "spidery" tales for kids at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, "Spidey Chats" at the Central Park and Bronx Zoos, Green Goblin mask-making at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan and a spider exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History. Original Spider-Man comic books will be on display at the New York Public Library, and the Apollo Theater in Harlem will host the closing day celebration with performances of Spider-Man inspired raps."
Wow, Spider-Man inspired raps?? That’s definitely going to add a few extra dollars to the opening weekend numbers! Sony explains the marketing juggernaut by reminding us that, hey, Spider-Man fights crime in NYC, so why shouldn’t he commandeer the entire city for an entire week?
