Last week was the longest RT on DVD article of the year, and this week, we’ve got the shortest RT on DVD article ever. While most films opted to hit the home video market before Christmas and take full advantage of the holiday buying rush, our one release today decided to throw caution to the wind. Rian Johnson’s Looper is the only home video release worth talking about this week, so without further ado, let’s talk about it.
We’ve never published an RT on DVD article dedicated entirely to a single movie, but there’s a first time for everything. And while Rian Johnson’s Looper is indeed a fine film, this has more to do with the fact that, well, there’s really nothing else to talk about in home video this week, and we’re just fine with that. In the near future of Looper, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Joe, a hitman employed by criminals from his future who illegally utilize time travel to dispose of their enemies. Every assassin must eventually “close the loop” by killing their future selves, but when Joe’s time comes, his older self (played by Bruce Willis) escapes, leading Joe to discover hard truths about the years to come and forcing him to make some difficult decisions in the present. Certified Fresh at 94%, Looper is a smart, thrilling, and thought-provoking sci-fi film that impressed critics with its originality and fast-paced action. If you’re looking for an entertaining way to spend a cold winter evening, this isn’t a bad way to end the year.
