New on Amazon Prime Video in January 2021

Regina King's One Night in Miami and season 6B of Vikings are just a few of the many films, TV series and specials newly available on Amazon Prime Video in January.

Oscar season is in full swing, and January marks one of 2021’s most anticipated debuts in Regina King’s One Night in Miami. The feature directorial debut from the Oscar-winning actress is based on the play by Kemp Power and stars Kingsley Ben-Adir, Aldis Hodge, Leslie Odom Jr., and Eli Goree as real-life historical figures Malcolm X, Jim Brown, Sam Cooke and Cassius clay as they gather to discuss the responsibility of being successful black men during the civil rights movement on Feb. 25, 1964.

That’s not the only film hitting the streaming service this month — new-to-Prime Video features including 2020 Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne comedy Like a Boss, Blake Lively action thriller The Rhythm Section; plus recent classics like Face/Off, Soul Food, St. Elmo’s Fire, and The Truman Show.

On the TV side, the final 10 episodes of History Channel drama Vikings debut exclusively on Prime on December 30 — yes, that isn’t technically in January, but since the news was announced just this month and its release is just one day away from 2021, it totally counts! Those episodes will be joined by season 1 of Anna Paquin’s British dramedy Flack, political drama Tanday, survival/engineering series The Great Escapists, all nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother, all eight seasons of Dexter, and the most recent season of PBS detective series Grantchester.

Keep reading to find out what else is new on Amazon Prime Video in January, with some highlights noted at the top.

Vikings: Season 6 (2019)

Description: The final 10 episodes of the hit History Channel drama series Vikings are premiering first on Prime Video in the US, UK, Germany, Austria and Ireland. The critically acclaimed, Emmy Award–winning series from creator and sole writer Michael Hirst is a family saga that tells the remarkable tales of the lives and epic adventures of the Nordic raiders and explorers of the Dark Ages. The final 10 episodes of the series, known as season 6B, join the previous seasons already included with Prime.

Premiere Date: December 30

Herself (2021)

Description: Single mother Sandra (Clare Dunne) escapes her abusive partner with her two young children, only to find herself trapped in temporary accommodation. After months of struggling, she draws inspiration from one of her daughter’s bedtime stories and hits upon the idea of self-building an affordable home. She finds an architect who provides her with plans and is offered land by Peggy (Harriet Walter), a woman she cleans for. Aido (Conleth Hill), a building contractor, appears willing to help, too. But as her past rears its head in the form of Gary (Ian Lloyd Anderson), her possessive ex, and as bureaucrats fight back against her independent spirit, will Sandra be able to rebuild her life from the ground up?

Critics Consensus: Sensitively directed by Phyllida Lloyd and brought to life by co-writer Clare Dunne’s starring performance, Herself charts one woman’s journey with empathy and grace.

Premiere Date: January 8

One Night in Miami (2020)

Description: One incredible night in 1964, four icons — Cassius Clay (Eli Goree), Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.), and Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge) — gathered to celebrate one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. Directed by Regina King, One Night in Miami is a fictional account that looks at the struggles these men faced and the vital role they each played in the civil rights movement and cultural upheaval of the 1960s.

Critics Consensus: A hauntingly powerful reflection on larger-than-life figures, One Night in Miami finds Regina King in command of her craft in her feature directorial debut.

Premiere Date: January 15

Flack: Season 1 (2019)

Description: Bad Behavior. Great Publicists. Ever wonder what the real story is behind those celebrity gossip columns? Flack has all the dirt. Four quick-witted and relentless flackers led by Robyn, played by Academy Award Winner Anna Paquin, are tasked to make the best of their celebrity clients’ terrible decisions. But does their ability to clean up their client’s lives translate to their own? Season 1 originally premiered on Pop, but is now an Amazon Original. Season 2 premiere later in 2021.

Critics Consensus: Audiences looking for an arsenic cookie of a series may cut Flack some slack, but its cynical take on publicity is exacerbated by hyperbolically unpleasant, underdeveloped characters.

Premiere Date: January 22
