TAGGED AS:

The summer movie season is nearly upon us, and the first month of the season brings us the expected collection of big-budget blockbusters and franchise installments, along with some festival favorites and even a couple of streaming offerings. With so many choices, we asked you what movies you were most looking forward to in May, and the results are in! The top three choices aren’t likely to surprise many people, but the films that just eked into the fourth and fifth slots might warrant a double take. Read on for the Most Anticipated Movies of May!

No. 1

Release Date: May 24, 2024

Considering 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road is a multiple Oscar-winner and considered one of the best action films of the last few decades, if not all time, it’s no surprise to see its prequel spin-off right at the top of the list here. Throw in a cast that includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and a few familiar faces from Fury Road, and you’ve got a recipe for blockbuster success.

After rebooting with a trio of both critically and commercially successful films, the Planet of the Apes franchise looks to continue the streak with a new installment set around 300 years after the events of the last one, 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes. This time, Maze Runner director Wes Ball is behind the camera for a story that follows a young chimpanzee who links up with a feral human to take down a tyrannical ape king, and hopes are high this one will live up to its predecessors.

To round out the top three vote-getters this month, we have the Ryan Gosling-Emily Blunt action rom-com that doubles as a love letter to stunt performers, directed by former stuntman and action guru David Leitch. You’ve probably seen this film advertised everywhere for the past several months, so you know what you’re in for, but it’s worth noting that the first big film of the summer season is already Certified Fresh, so we’re off to a good start.

No. 4

Release Date: May 17, 2024

Pamela Adlon makes her feature directorial debut with this comedy starring Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau, which debuted earlier this year at South by Southwest to sparkling reviews. Glazer plays a single woman who gets pregnant from a one-night stand, decides to keep the baby, and seeks help from her childhood BFF, a married mother with a couple kids of her own. Being that it’s a small film from a rookie director without any giant names in the cast, it’s refreshing to see it beat the likes of The Strangers and few other buzzworthy indie gems to make it into the top five.

No. 5

Release Date: May 17, 2024

Lastly, we have something for the whole family. John Krasinski has handed the Quiet Place films off to others for now, so his latest is a live-action/animated hybrid about a young girl who gains the ability to see Imaginary Friends, learns her grown-up neighbor (Ryan Reynolds) also has the ability, and teams up with him to reunite IFs with the former children who abandoned them. The voice cast for the IFs is absolutely stacked with names like Steve Carell, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Maya Rudolph, George Clooney, and more, so this could be a treat for both kids and their parents.
