Angelina Jolie is readying a return to the spy thriller genre — with a twist.
Variety reports that Jolie has been tabbed by Paramount to star in a film about the life of Kathi Lynn Austin, an intelligence operative whose story was recently sold to the studio. From the article:
Austin, who has most recently worked on contract for the U.N. Security Council, has undertaken field missions in Africa, Europe, Southeast Asia and Central America. The drama will focus on a fictional arms dealer inspired by Victor Bout, the shadowy Russian who is considered one of the world’s most prolific dealers in illegal munitions.
Variety describes the project as being “similar in spirit to The Bourne Identity.” The studio is said to have a list of potential screenwriters; negotiations will begin after the strike. Meanwhile, Austin is set to writer her memoirs, and her representatives are about to begin looking for bids from potential publishers.
