Before launching into the new season of Game of Thrones on Sunday, find out where we left off with all of your favorite characters and get a reminder of who’s dead now.
TEAM MOTHER OF DRAGONS
Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke)
Who: The last surviving child of the Mad King, Aerys Targaryen, she is heir to the Iron Throne — in the world according to her. Titles include: Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men; Lady Regnant of the Seven Kingdoms; Protector of the Realm; Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea; Breaker of Chains; Mother of Dragons.
Last seen: Crossing the Narrow Sea with a naval force and three enormous dragons to take back her birthright.
Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage)
Who: The younger sibling of incestuous Lannister twins Cersei and Jaime, dwarf Tyrion is also the black sheep, an accused kingslayer, and a true kinslayer, having served his father a bolt to the belly.
Last seen: At the side of Daenerys on the way to Westeros.
Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen)
Who: The youngest son of the late Balon Greyjoy, deceased king of the Iron Islands, Theon escaped the clutches of evil (now dead) Ramsay Bolton, saw Sansa Stark safely north, then returned to his sister, Yara, who was campaigning for the Ironborn crown. The threat of their ambitious uncle Euron sent the Greyjoy siblings fleeing into the arms of the Mother of Dragons — along with a fleet of ships and loyal Ironborn warriors.
Last seen: Sailing west from Essos with Daenerys.
Yara Greyjoy (Gemma Whelan)
Who: The would-be first female queen of the Ironborn, fled the Iron Islands with a fleet, fierce warriors, and her emotionally and physically damaged younger brother Theon. Her goal: To offer her forces to Daenerys Targaryen in exchange for her support against uncle Euron, who wants them dead.
Last seen: Sailing west from Essos with Daenerys.
Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen)
Who: The banished heir to Bear Island revealed to his queen Daenerys that he contracted the usually lethal disease greyscale. She commanded him to find a cure and then return to her service.
Last seen: Parting ways with Daenerys in Essos.
Lord Varys (Conleth Hill)
Who: After helping Tyrion escape and traveling with him to the continent of Essos across the Narrow Sea, the former Master of Whisperers is now on Team Daenerys. In season 6, he was seen meeting with the deadly Dornish Sand Snakes – the mistress and illegitimate daughters of the Viper, Oberyn Martell, who was killed representing Tyrion Lannister in his season 4 trial by combat. Olenna Tyrell, the last living principal member of wealthy House Tyrell, was also at this meeting, suggesting the first potential Westerosi support for the Mother of Dragons.
Last seen: Sailing west from Essos with Daenerys.
Daario Naharis (Michiel Huisman)
Who: The Mother of Dragons’ lover and head of her fierce mercenary fighting force the Sons of the Harpy helped her retake the city of Meereen from the slave masters who’d funded a rebellion.
Last seen: Summoned to speak with Daenerys, he is bitterly disappointed when she commands him to remain in Meereen and keep the peace while a government is formed in the city. Daenerys needs to focus on retaking the Iron Throne, and bringing her lover along could hinder her attempts to find support in Westeros, where a marriage pact may be necessary.
Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel)
Who: One of Daenerys’ most trusted advisors, this former slave is a master of languages and very clearly in love with Grey Worm, the eunuch who leads Daenerys’ army of Unsullied.
Last seen: Sailing west from Essos with Daenerys.
Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson)
Who: A warrior beyond compare, eunuch and former slave Grey Worm (“Torgo Nudho” in Valyrian) has been instrumental in rallying Daenerys’ Unsullied army. He and Daenerys’ other advisor Missandei are in love.
Last seen: Heading to Westeros with Daenerys.
TEAM KING IN THE NORTH
Jon Snow (Kit Harington)
Who: The bastard of Winterfell is actually the bastard of Daenerys’ older brother, deceased Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, and Ned Stark’s deceased younger sister, Lyanna Stark, not the bastard of Ned himself, as everyone was led to believe. (But his “half-brother” Bran Stark is the only living person who knows this for certain.) The former Lord Commander, Jon abandoned the Night’s Watch on a technicality: “Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death.” After being murdered by some of his Night’s Watch brothers then resurrected by Red Priestess Melisandre, Jon felt he’d done his duty and took off to retake Winterfell. He defeated psychotic Ramsay Bolton with the help of his “half-sister” Sansa Stark, who mined her political connections to summon the Knights of the Vale.
Last seen: In the great room at Winterfell, being hailed “King in the North” by his allies.
Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner)
Who: Married against her will twice, potential Winterfell heir Sansa got revenge on her abusive second husband Ramsay Bolton by enlisting her “half-brother” (really cousin) Jon Snow to rally the northern houses and retake the Stark family home. She’s technically still married to Tyrion Lannister, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens if/when that reunion takes place. Sansa was the hero of the Battle of the Bastards (the forces of Jon Snow vs. those of Ramsay Bolton) for swallowing her hatred of political operator Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish and asking him for his help in the battle for Winterfell.
Last seen: Sitting uncomfortably at the head table in the Winterfell great room as Jon Snow is hailed “King in the North.”
Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish (Aidan Gillen)
Who: Master manipulator Littlefinger delivered the Knights of the Vale to strike the winning blow in the Battle of the Bastards – all the while whispering a dissembler’s poison into Sansa’s ear. She’s the heir to Winterfell, he reminds her and warns her that Jon Snow will take the power of that position from her.
Last seen: Giving Sansa a knowing – and sinister – look as Jon is named “King in the North.”
Robin Arryn (Lino Facioli)
Who: The Lord of the Vale, Robin is also a spoiled and – using the most generous terms – emotionally stunted, so he is easily manipulated by his wicked stepfather Littlefinger.
Last seen: In the Vale, ordering his Knights to aid his cousin Sansa at Winterfell.
Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham)
Who: Made a lord by throne-claimant Stannis Baratheon, former pirate-smuggler Davos found himself adrift after Stannis’ death and discovering Melisandre’s heinous crimes, including burning Stannis’ sweet young daughter Shireen alive. Now he advises the White Wolf, Jon Snow.
Last seen: At Winterfell, declaring Jon “The King in the North!”
Melisandre (Carice van Houten)
Who: A Red Priestess in the religion of R’hllor, the Lord of Light, Melisandre is a beautiful but deadly magical force, who convinced Stannis that he was the “Prince That Was Promised,” a savior in her religion who would wield a flaming sword. After Stannis died and she resurrected Jon Snow, she switched her prophesy to the former Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, but Davos – never her biggest fan – revealed her crimes to Jon who then banished her, warning her that she would be put to death if she returned.
Last seen: On a horse riding south away from Winterfell.
Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju)
Who: Jon’s most trusted wildling advisor and a fierce warrior, Tormund hearts Brienne.
Last seen: At Winterfell, declaring Jon “The King in the North!”
Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey)
Who: Named after Ned Stark’s dead sister (Jon Snow’s biological mother), the Lady Mormont is the fierce young head of House Mormont of Bear Island. She is the cousin of exiled Ser Jorah Mormont, who is loyal to Daenerys Targaryen.
Last seen: At Winterfell, making men feel like mice and declaring Jon “The King in the North!”
Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie)
Who: Lady knight Brienne has now fulfilled half of her oath to the late Catelyn Stark by delivering her eldest daughter safely to Winterfell. Now if only she could only find and throw Arya over a shoulder and walk her through the gates, she’ll have completed her promise. Gives us the feels just thinking about it.
Last seen: At Winterfell, watching the northern forces rally around Jon Snow, and giving epic side-eye to the Red Priestess Melisandre, who killed Renly Baratheon, her favored throne-claimant.
Podrick Payne (Daniel Portman)
Who: Tyrion Lannister’s former squire, then Brienne of Tarth’s squire, now – who knows really. He’s Brienne’s traveling companion, warrior-in-training, and a junior executive member of the northern entourage.
Last seen: At Brienne’s heels in Winterfell.
Samwell Tarly (John Bradley)
Who: Jon Snow’s closest friend and former steward to Maester Aemon (Targaryen) in the Night’s Watch, Sam was the first human in historical memory to kill a White Walker. He took wildling Gilly’s son as his own to endear them to his wealthy family – a plan that ultimately failed due to the prejudices of his father, Lord Randyll Tarly of Horn Hill.
Last seen: In the library of Citadel, where he hopes to study to become a maester to replace the late Maester Aemon of the Night’s Watch (on Jon Snow’s orders).
Gilly (Hannah Murray)
Who: Wildling Gilly was impregnated by her father Craster and had a son. She escaped her father’s keep north of the Wall with Samwell Tarley during a Night’s Watch rebellion and was saved from the attack of a White Walker by him. They later began a loving relationship.
Last seen: Waiting in the foyer of the Citadel in Oldtown while Sam arranges to speak to the Archmaester about his studies.
Eddison Tollett (Ben Crompton)
Who: One of Jon Snow’s trusted brothers of the Night’s Watch is now acting Lord Commander.
Last seen: Closing the gates of Castle Black as Jon Snow’s party leaves for its great tour of the northern houses (and the Battle of the Bastards beyond).
TEAM LANNISTER
Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey)
Who: Cersei is the former wife of one king, Robert Baratheon, who she murdered, mother to two: The first, Joffrey, was poisoned on his wedding day as part of a shadowy conspiracy. The other, Tommen, committed suicide because Cersei blew up his wife and in-laws along with an entire quarter of King’s Landing. She also had a sweet daughter poisoned by political opponents.
Last seen: On the Iron Throne, crowning herself queen.
Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau)
Who: Cersei’s twin and father of their three children was removed as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard by his son Tommen. Ser Jaime now heads the Lannister military forces.
Last seen: In the throne room, visibly disturbed as he watches lackey Qyburn crown Cersei queen of the Seven Kingdoms.
Bronn (Jerome Flynn)
Who: Tyrion Lannister’s one-time champion in his first trial by combat at the Vale, master swordsman Bronn now serves as a deputy to Jaime Lannister.
Last seen: On horseback next to Jaime Lannister on a hillside overlooking smoldering King’s Landing.
Ser Gregor Clegane (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson)
Who: Cersei’s champion, the Mountain was killed by the Viper in Tyrion Lannister’s second trial by combat, but resurrected in a little Frankenstein action perpetrated by Qyburn and has since acted as Cersei’s personal bodyguard, ripping her enemies to pieces as needed.
Last seen: Standing at Cersei’s side during her coronation.
Qyburn (Anton Lesser)
Who: The former maester – removed from the order due to his unnatural experiments on humans – not only resurrected Ser Gregor Clegane, but he took over the role as Master of Whisperers and orchestrated the murder of Grand Maester Pycelle.
Last seen: Standing at Cersei’s side during her coronation as the Hand of the Queen.
TEAM SAND SNAKES
Ellaria Sand, Tyene Sand, Nymeria Sand, Obara Sand (Indira Varma, Rosabell Laurenti Sellers, Jessica Henwick, Keisha Castle-Hughes)
Who: Ellaria, the lethal former mistress of the late Oberyn Martell, leads his illegitimate daughters in a rebellion against the remaining members of House Martell, the ruling family of Dorne. After poisoning Cersei and Jaime’s daughter Myrcella Baratheon the previous season, they murder Prince Doran Martell and his son Trystane, who had been betrothed to Myrcella.
Last seen: At the Water Gardens palace in Dorne, entertaining the Queen of Thornes, Oleanna Tyrell.
Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg)
Who: House Tyrell no longer has future, according to its matriarch, who fled King’s Landing before Cersei Lannister blew up the Great Sept killing most of House Tyrell, including Queen Magaery, Loras Tyrell, Mace Tyrell, in addition to the High Sparrow, Lancel Lannister, and Kevan Lannister.
Last seen: At the Water Gardens palace in Dorne, being offered vengeance by the Sand Snakes and, from visiting Lord Varys on behalf of the Mother of Dragons, “Fire and blood.”
FREE-RANGE CHARACTERS
Arya Stark (Maisie Williams)
Who: The youngest remaining Stark is clearly Team King in the North, but she just has to get there first to declare her allegiance – in what is one of the series’ most highly anticipated reunions.
Last seen: Serving Walder Frey his sons in a pie at the Twins, then slitting his throat.
“Jaqen H’ghar” (Tom Wlaschiha)
Who: One – possibly more (you just never know with these guys) – of the Faceless Men of the House of Black and White in Braavos, he has trained Arya Stark to be a lethal assassin, or “no one.”
Last seen: In the Hall of Faces in the House of Black and White, agreeing to allow Arya return to her family in Westeros.
Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright)
Who: Another who would certainly be on Team King in the North, Bran is actually the true male heir of Winterfell. He’s also a Greenseer – one who can see the past, future, or distant events – and is now the Three-Eyed Raven after the death of the old man in the tree.
Last seen: After being saved by his mostly dead uncle Benjen, Bran hugged a tree and saw the truth about Jon Snow’s parentage.

Last seen: Trying on the boots of one of those now-dead mercenaries and being invited to join the Brotherhood.
