See the premiere trailer for theΒ Assassin’s Creed adaptation, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, directed by Justin Kurzel (Macbeth):

  • Joe Eoj

Kanye West really needs to fuck off.

    • Smirking_Revenge

I agree. But I also think video game to movie adaptations need to fuck of as well. In the history of film there has yet to be a video game movie that is even decent. They all suck. Every single one of them.

      • creox

Which makes me very puzzled why Fassbender took it on. Must have been a shit ton of cash involved…or….he’s a fan ;P

        • Mot Cumberton

He has a relationship with the director. He was lead in Macbeth, which was Kurzel’s previous film. Same goes for Marion Cotillard. The truth is, Justin Kurzel is a very talented director, and after making such a good adaptation of one of Shakespear’s finest; I don’t blame them for having some fun with this schlock.

You sir, need to lay off that reefer.

          • Mot Cumberton

Very cool comment, thanks. Hey enjoy your Warcraft movie.

          • Acewild25

Thank ya ma’am. I shall enjoy it. Enjoy your hatred towards life, with all that feministic nerd raging.

On second thought, that reffer is probably a good stability for you. Gonna give yourself a heart attack if you don’t chill out. Lol

          • Mot Cumberton

Alrighty. Your autism just went off the charts. Never stop posting Acewild25.

          • Acewild25

            I’m here for you, pumpkin.

      • Acewild25

I agree, video game movies have yet to succeed at meeting expectations. None have even come close yet. However, I feel World of Warcraft will change this theory.

        • Mot Cumberton

          lol

        • Fuebay

no no it will not. wow looks guaranteed to be complete garbage. Notice how A list actors avoided it like a plague. And what you got there was a observation not a theory.

        • Joe Eoj

Moon and Source Code were interesting movies. I’ll probably watch WoW just because but I’m not stoked it looks pretty stupid and as someone who’s not a gamer I have no reference.

          • Smirking_Revenge

Huh… I had no idea that Duncan Jones is directing Warcraft. Moon is one of my favorite movies and I also liked Source Code.

I hate to sound so cynical but when I see directors taking on a project of “lower stature” (for lack of better word) it makes me think they’re chasing money and he’s just a puppet for the studio that is producing the movie.

Maybe I’m wrong but if history is anything to go by, I’m not going to hold my breath for this Warcraft movie. I’m not even a fan of Warcraft anyway πŸ˜›

On its own, that’s a silly argument to make. Let’s rewind by a couple of decades and ponder how many even remotely good comic book based movies were there. An odd Batman or Superman flick? And comics have been around “slightly” longer than video games. To the point that the two aforementioned superheroes had enough time to embed themselves into a larger part of popular culture by various means.

It’s not a problem with the original medium per se (even though games already start out as a much more cinematic experience than any literary works) – in theory you could turn any compelling story into a compelling movie experience. But it takes right people to do so; certainly not Uwe Bolls of the world.

As for video game movies that were at least decent? You would find some, going by overall audience scores (first Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider, or Resident Evil; Hitman or Prince of Persia). Not so much when going by critic scores, but there is an argument to be made that the vast majority of critics still belong to that older generation which tends to frown at video games as a medium by default (I still remember how ignorant Roger Ebert had made himself out to be when he attempted to discuss something he wasn’t familiar with). The aforementioned titles also double up as action movies, which tend to get lower scores on average because redundancy and similarity.

And while I personally wouldn’t go so far as to say that all of those video game movies completely sucked, I agree that there wasn’t even one that I could call good (I especially hated how they destroyed Prince of Persia, that’s some abysmal screenwriting). Yet it doesn’t mean there can’t be.

        • Smirking_Revenge

I disagree with your comparison to comic books. For starters comic books have been around far longer than video games but that’s beyond the point. There are many comic to film adaptations that were successful. Yes Batman and Superman. But also Watchmen, Sin City, X-Men, Avengers, Capt. America, Iron Man, the list goes on and on and on. Those are actually good movies that were written well with good dialogue, good acting, good direction, pace, cinematography, production quality, etc… I can’t say the same for Tomb Raider or Resident Evil or any other videogame movie that comes to mind.

Don’t get me wrong I think it would be great if a videogame movie comes out and actually is decent. But after all these years I guess I’m just disillusioned. I’ve seen the trailers for Warcraft and now this one for Assassin’s Creed. They just don’t look that good. Warcraft looks like it’s going to be another Final Fantasy and Assassin’s Creed just looks… well, bad.

I’m a huge Mass Effect fan it’s my favorite videogame(s) ever. A part of me really wants to see it turned into a movie. The other part of me is very wary that it will fall into the same hole that all these other videogame movies have.

        • AndyWear

Very well said. I feel the same.

      • AndyWear

Well its not because its its a video game movie that makes it sucks. The director that have been directing them just sucks. Videogame movies can be very good, it just haven’t been given proper attention to and haven’t been taken too serious. Comic book movies were in the same boat, until they started getting good. You just need one person to do it right and the rest will follow.

  • BIGNASTY

I just want to see a decent video game movie in my lifetime. Hopefully the Sly Cooper movie doesn’t disappoint me.

  • Chris Geriak

Too many scrubs complaining about Kanye West

Yeah the song sucks but I think this has potential. They have a good director (Justin Kurzel) and a great cast and I think this was a pretty good trailer overall.

And for the record, that Warcraft movie will blow. That is a fact.

  • Chris .Tocke

That trailer was going well until I heard the horrible music

  • clayhughes

wow way to ruin a cool looking movie with some baboon puking his “rap” song up at the beginning that he obviously spend about 3 minutes writing… a child could write that,… repeating the same thing lol. just shot theirselves in the foot

  • Noel Anthony Fuller

Anybody else notice half of the action sequences they portray would likely cause you to fail the mission in the game? #nostealth
