Variety brings some indie news: Ryan Gosling ("The Notebook") and Anthony Mackie ("Million Dollar Baby") will co-star in "Half Nelson," an independent drama that starts production this week in New York.

Based on the award-winning short film "Gowanus, Brooklyn," the feature film is about "a unique relationship between a white schoolteacher, his African-American student and a local drug dealer."

The film marks the debut of director Ryan Fleck, who co-wrote the "Nelson" screenplay with frequent collaborator Anna Boden.
