Even 20 years after its release, Avatar: The Last Airbender remains a beloved and influential animated series. This is a show that helped revolutionize epic fantasy in TV animation with vast worldbuilding, mature themes that treated its young audience seriously, stunning action, and poignant character development.

Adapting the world of The Last Airbender to live-action hasn’t been easy, as seen by the failed M. Night Shyamalan adaptation. Still, it seems Netflix has found a way to make it work — mostly. The show proved popular enough with audiences to get a second season, which is due out later this year. Season 2 of the original animated series was ambitious, epic in scope, and introduced some of the most beloved characters, so the stakes are high for the live-action adaptation. Before you master all the elements, here is what you need to know about Avatar: The Last Airbender: Season 2.

After defeating the Fire Nation invasion of the Northern Water Tribe, Aang (Gordon Cormier) still has to master the rest of the elements before the Fire Nation conquers the world. To do that, he and his friends Sokka (Ian Ousley) and Katara (Kiawentiio) must venture into the Earth Kingdom, a place full of secrets, dangers, and excitement. If season 1 is any indication, we know quite a bit of where season 2 is going based on the cartoon’s Book Two: Earth. In it, the “Gaang” spends a lot of time in the capital city of Ba Sing Se, uncovering conspiracies and facing the never-ending threat of the Fire Nation. Additionally, Prince Zuko (played by Dallas Liu in the live-action series) continues his journey of self-discovery and his not so successful attempts at redemption.

This is set to be a much bigger season than the first, with stunning locations, big battles, and pivotal moments for every character — especially Aang. If it follows the animated show, then fans should also be prepared for some truly emotionally devastating moments this upcoming season. As executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani told TUDUM, “We’re going to challenge our characters with more complex and nuanced obstacles as they navigate a more tactile world.”

In addition to the return of the Gaang and characters like Azula (Elizabeth Yu), Uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee), Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim), the season is introducing plenty of new faces. With most of the story taking place in the Earth Kingdom, we’re going to see a lot of different aspects of that nation’s culture, from the high nobility to their military and even sports athletes.

Most important among them is Toph (Miya Cech), one of the most beloved characters in the original series. She is an earthbender who was born blind but trained to instead to feel and sense the world around her through vibrations in the ground. Toph is one of the strongest benders in the world, a character who balances a sarcastic sense of humor with plenty of stubbornness, but also a quiet vulnerability.

Additionally, this season will bring along Jeong Jeong (Terry Chen), a firebending master who deserted the Fire Nation army; Long Feng (Chin Han), the personal advisor to the Earth King and a calculating power broker; The Boulder (Kelemete Misipeka), an earthbending wrestler; King Kuei of the Earth Kingdom (Justin Chien); and Professor Zei (Hoa Xuande).

Albert Kim, who initially replaced creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, developed the first season but exited the Netflix live-action series for season 2. Instead, co-executive producer Christine Boylan and executive producer Jabbar Raisani are taking over as the third round of showrunners for Avatar: The last Airbender for the second and third seasons of the show. Raisani and Boylan were both hired by Kim.

They are not strangers to the world of Avatar, as Raisani directed two episodes of the first season, while Boylan wrote an episode of the first season.

When will the season premiere?

If Uncle Iroh has taught us anything, it is to be patient. We knew for some time that Avatar: The Last Airbender: Season 2 was set to premiere on Netflix at some point in 2026, but it wasn’t until the very end of March that we got a date announcement teaser (see above) letting us know the next chapter would be arriving on June 25, 2026. That’s still a few months away, so in the meantime, fans can look forward to the already confirmed third season, which will conclude the story and adapt the original series’ Book Three: Fire.
