Black may have been in last year,
but set your winter fashion to deep red this Christmas: Dreamworks has announced
a December 21 release date for
Sweeney Todd, the musical thriller by
Tim Burton and starring
Johnny Depp.
You already knew the release date? You already cleared your schedule for that day, and circled the date on your
calendar? Actually, Dreamworks is bumping up Sweeney Todd from a limited
release to a wide release. According to Variety, Burton had been pushing for
the film to go wide, concerned that a limited release would give the impression
Sweeney was an arthouse flick.
An adaptation of Stephen
Sondheim’s Broadway musical, Sweeney Todd stars Johnny Depp as the
titular barber, out to avenge the death of his wife and child. Despite the
brouhaha over Warner Bros. (the film’s UK distributor)
allegedly snipping Sweeney Todd for a PG-13 rating, Dreamworks and
Paramount still appear ready to release the movie as an R picture in the US.
