Tired of remakes, sequels, and videogame/comic book adaptations? David Cronenberg‘s next project might be of interest to you. Particularly if you have a degree in psychiatry.

ScreenDaily reports that for his next film, Cronenberg will be adapting Christopher Hampton‘s play The Talking Cure, which takes a look at the collaboration between Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. From the article:

The Talking Cure follows the founding fathers of psychoanalysis, Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, and their complicated relationships with a brilliant and beautiful patient, Sabina Spielrein.

Jung and Freud’s theories went on to influence differing schools of psychiatric thought, but for roughly nine years, the duo’s regular correspondence proved influential for both men. Hampton’s play originally ran in London, where Ralph Fiennes played Jung.

According to ScreenDaily‘s report, no cast is confirmed for the film, which will be produced by Jeremy Thomas. Cronenberg, currently working on an opera version of The Fly, is scheduled to start working on The Talking Cure in mid-2008, at which point — wait, did someone just say opera version of The Fly?
