John Woo, master of balletic gun-fights replete with slow-mo dove flying, has surprisingly announced at Cannes yesterday that his next project will be a big budget Chinese romance.

According to Variety, when the Face/Off director completes his current epic actioner Red Cliff, he will turn his attentions to 1949, which revolves around the final, tumultuous years of the Chinese civil war.

Chang Chen and Song Hye-kyo star, while the author of the very-similar-sounding Lust, Caution will write the screenplay. The film will be released in December 2009, to coincide with the anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.

So, happy Woo has ditched the guns and the doves, or has he just gone a bit soft?
