2014 Winter TV Preview

It’s cold outside and lots of our favorite shows are on hiatus. We do get to look forward to keeping warm as many of them return, along with some new shows to replace some that are missing (and we hope to enjoy them as much). We’ve put together a preview of what to see in the coming months and when. New shows like Helix, Intelligence, Looking and Killer Women will be gracing our screens at home, but we also will see the happy return of faves like The Americans, The Walking Dead, Teen Wolf, Scandal, Hannibal and Justified. This list includes shows that are new or will have been on hiatus for a while, so check out RT’s Winter Midseason 2014 Preview for a full rundown of what to watch this season!

About a Boy (new) – NBC – Tuesdays 9pm – Premieres 2/22

An eternal bachelor’s life is turned upside down when a boy and his mother move in next door.

The Americans Season 2 – FX – Wednesdays 10pm – Premieres 2/26

Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys return for the second season of the 1980’s hit spy cold war drama. We look forward to a new handler for Elizabeth and Philip as we wonder if their marriage will completely disintegrate. And what happens if the kids find out?

Archer Season 5 – FX – Mondays 10pm – Premieres 1/13

Sterling Archer and the other agents of the International Secret Intelligence Service (ISIS) are back for another round of missions, espionage, counter-intellegence, drunken debauchery and general shenanigans.

Baby Daddy Season 2 – Fox – Wednesdays 8:30pm – Premieres 1/15

After a baby is left on his doorstep by an ex, Ben decides to raise her with the help of his mom, brother, and two best friends. This saga continues into its third season in January.

Banshee Season 2 – Cinemax – Fridays 10pm – Premieres 1/10

Banshee returns for its second season. From the makers of True Blood, this drama features Antony Starr as Lucas Hood, an ex-con that is hiding in plain sight after assuming the identity of a murdered small town sheriff. But things are going to get interesting as the real Lucas Hood’s son prepares to come to town for a visit.

Being Human Season 3 – SyFy – Mondays 9pm – Premieres 1/13

Vampires, Ghosts & Werewolves, oh my! They’re all back for season four, but if you can’t wait, Syfy has all the episodes of the previous three season streaming live on their website for you to binge on.

Bitten (new) – SyFy – Mondays 10pm – Premieres 1/13

Psychotic serial killer werewolves are on the loose, and Elena Michaels (Laura Vandervoort) is one werewolf trying to hunt them down.

Black Sails (new) – Starz – Saturdays 9pm – Premieres 1/25

This new series by Michael Bay is a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island; following the adventures of a young John Silver as he enters the world of piracy as the newest member of the crew for the fearsome Captain Flint.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 1 Resumes – FOX – Tuesdays 8:30pm – Premieres 1/7

A single camera cop comedy starring Andy Samberg, an immature detective attempting to co-exist with his uptight boss played by Andre Braugher.

Chicago PD (new) – NBC – Wednesdays 10pm – Premieres 1/8

In a spin-off from the same producer that brought us Chicago Fire, this cop drama is made up of two completely different groups: the uniformed policeman that patrol the streets and the Intelligence Unit that looks into human trafficking and high-profile murderers.

Chozen (new) – FX – Mondays 10pm – Premieres 1/13

Chozen is a gay, white rapper that’s just gotten out of prison and is trying to fulfill his destiny to become the greatest rap artist of all time in this new animated comedy from the creators of Eastbound & Down and Archer.

Cold Justice Season 2 – TNT – Fridays 9pm – Premieres 1/17

Season 2 has Kelly and Yolanda traveling around the US helping investigators try to solve more cold cases in their home territories. Dick Wolf produces this reality drama.

Community Season 5 – NBC – Thursdays 8pm – Premieres 1/2

Greendale Community College’s favorite study group is back for another semester, and will have to find their own way now that Jeff has graduated and is a lawyer again.

Cougar Town Season 5 – TBS – Tuesdays 10:00pm – Premieres 1/7

More from the cul-de-sac this January, as Courteney Cox and the crew bring us 13 new episodes in Season 5.

Dallas Season 2 – TNT – Mondays 9pm – Premieres 2/24

A reboot of the 1978 classic series, season 3 begins in the wake of J.R.’s death as the Ewings come together to find who killed this infamous patriarch.

Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey Season 4 – PBS – Sundays 9pm – Premieres 1/5

This upstairs/downstairs British drama begins it’s fourth season as Mary and the Crawley family deal with the death of her husband, Matthew.

Enlisted (new) – FOX – Fridays 9:30pm – Premieres 1/10

A single camera comedy where three polar opposite brothers all end up at the same military base after joining the army.

Episodes Season 3 – Showtime – Sundays 10:30pm – Premieres 1/12

Matt LeBlanc as….Matt LeBlanc, in a show about a show that is based on a hit British sitcom (in the show), but being produced in the US by folks who think it needs a lot of Americanizing.

The Following Season 2 – FOX – Mondays 10pm – Premieres 1/19

We know that Emma (Valorie Curry) is back, likely to take over where cult-leader serial killer Joe Carroll left off. Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) is in more big trouble now.

The Fosters Season 1 Resumes – ABC Family – Mondays 9pm – Premieres 1/13

In the second half of season 1, Stef, Lena and the kids deal with the aftermath of Callie running away and what that means for their family.

Girls Season 3 – HBO – Sundays 10pm – Premieres 1/12

Back for its third season, Hannah, Marnie, Jessa and Shoshanna continue to deal with what life throws at a 20-something female living in the Big Apple.

Glee Season 5 Resumes – FOX – Tuesdays 8pm – Premieres 2/25

Returning for its 100th episode of the series, we continue to follow the New Directions in Lima, Ohio, while some old favs are making their dreams come true in NYC.

Grey's Anatomy

Grey’s Anatomy Season 10 Resumes – ABC – Thursdays 9pm – Premieres 2/27

With Meredith and Cristina fighting, and April’s wedding cliffhanger, we are already trying to guess what will happen next, and how Cristina will be written off this long running show, as Grey’s tenth season resumes.

Growing Up Fisher (new) – NBC – Tuesdays 9:30pm – Premieres 2/23

In an unconventional manner, a family is brought closer together by divorce. Oh and Dad’s blind!

Hannibal Season 2 – NBC – Fridays 10pm – Premieres 2/28

Mads Mikkelsen brings his creepy serial killer psychiatrist Hannibal character back to life for a second season in which more intrigue and scares are promised.

Helix (new) – SyFy – Fridays 10pm – Premieres 1/10

Ron Moore’s new sci-fi show about agents of the Centers for Disease Control investigating an outbreak of a new disease in the arctic, but end up fighting to save mankind. Star Trek: Voyager‘s Jeri Ryan has signed on to join the cast.

House of Cards Season 2 – Netflix – Streaming – Premieres 2/14

Now that Frank Underwood has manuvered his way into the Vice Presidency, he faces a whole new level of threats to his position and must stop at nothing to continue his plans for ascension.

House of Lies

House of Lies Season 3 – Showtime – Sundays 10:00pm – Premieres 1/12

Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell return to resume their on/off romance while working now at different firms sometimes with – sometimes against – one another.

Intelligence (new) – CBS – Tuesdays 9pm – Premieres 1/7

A supercomputer microchip is implanted into elite government cyber security agent Josh Holloway’s brain so he can interact on the global information grid. Hacking in to get top secret intel will help him protect the U.S. from her enemies. But it can also get him into a lot of trouble.

Justified Season 5 – FX – Tuesdays 10pm – Premieres 1/7

Justified finds Raylan in Florida tangling with the dangerous Crowe Family and Boyd in Detroit dealing with what’s left of the Mob in that city in pursuit of Paxton and Mooney, who had his bride-to-be arrested.

Killer Women (new) – ABC – Tuesdays 10pm – Premieres 1/7

Tricia Helfer is Molly Parker, a female member of the Texas Rangers and all-around badass that specializes in capturing female killers.

Legit Season 2 – FXX – Wednesdays – Premieres February 26

Jim Jefferies, as his own comic self, tries to live a normal and successful life.

Looking (new) – HBO – Sundays 10:30pm – Premieres 1/19

Three friends bond, live and love in contemporary San Francisco. Looking is a new, gay-themed miniseries from HBO. Special guest stars include Russell Tovey and Scott Bakula.

Lost Girl Season 4 – SyFy – Mondays 8pm – Premieres 1/13

Not just your average show about a young succubus discovering her innate supernatural proclivities. Already on the air in Canada, the US now will have access to Season 4.

Melissa & Joey Season 4 – ABC Family – Wednesdays 8pm – Premieres 1/15

It’s a 90’s throwback with Melissa Joan Hart starring as Mel Burke — a local politician who hires Joe Longo (Joe Lawrence) to watch after her niece and nephew. He’s a manny.

Men at Work Season 3 – TBS – Wednesdays (Time TBD) – Premieres 1/15

This TBS sitcom revolves around the trials and tribulations of 4 magazine workers dealing with life, dating and career.

Mixology (new) – ABC – Wednesdays 9:30pm – Premieres 2/26

In a vignette style series that takes place over the course of one night, we follow 11 strangers at a bar and watch their stories unfold.

New Girl Season 3 Resumes – FOX – Tuesdays 9pm – Premieres TBD

Golden Globe nominee Zooey Deschanel stars as Jess, a quirky young school teacher, living with three guys — one of whom she’s now dating — and enjoying all the shenanigans that ensue from the situation.

Parks and Recreation Season 6 Resumes – NBC – Thursdays 8:30pm – Premieres 1/9

Parks and Recreation returns from hiatus to celebrate their 100th episode. Leslie has a plan that she hopes will get her back onto Pawnee’s City Council.

Perception Season 3 – TNT – Tuesdays 10pm – Premieres 2/25

Perception, one of TNT’s most popular shows, begins a third season with Eric McCormack as everybody’s favorite paranoid schizophrenic neuroscience professor and FBI consultant.

Portlandia

Portlandia Season 4- IFC – Thursdays 10pm – Premieres 2/27

Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein are back for a ten-episode 4th season, poking fun at life and culture in Portland.

Pretty Little Liars Season 4 Resumes – ABC Family- Tuesdays 8pm – Premieres 1/7

The second half of the season returns to the Liars dealing with the fact that Ali has been alive this whole time, yet “A” is still out to get them?!?!

Psych Season 8 – USA – Wednesdays 9:00pm – Premieres 1/8

After their fun and well-received musical episode, the cast of Psych is psyched for a new season, which will include Harry Potter, a remake episode and the return of Cary Elwes as Despereaux.

Rake (new) – FOX – Sundays 9pm – Premieres 1/23

Rake is a legal dramedy based on a hit Australian series of the same name, featuring Greg Kinnear as a defense attorney who’s biggest trial is his own personal life.

Ravenswood Season 1 Resumes – ABC Family – Tuesdays 9pm – Premieres 1/7

Ravenswood returns finding the 5 main characters continuing to dig into a clue involving the fatal curse they appear to be a part of.

Rizzoli & Isles Season 5 – TNT – Tuesdays 9pm – Premieres 2/25

Rizzoli & Isles are back on the beat; and with Maura’s surly, recently paroled grandfather in tow, things are bound to get complicated.

Scandal

Scandal Season 3 Resumes – ABC – Thursdays 10pm – Premieres 2/27

Coming back from Winter hiatus, Scandal picks up with Quinn still in limbo over where her loyalties lie and Olivia’s terrorist mom is on the loose in DC.

Shameless Season 4 – Showtime – Sundays 9pm – Premieres 1/12

The Gallagher family is back and trying to make a go of it: together and as individuals. But since it’s the Gallaghers we’re talking about here the only thing that’s certain? It’s not going to go smoothly.

Sherlock

Sherlock Season 3 – PBS – Sundays 10pm – Premieres 1/19
After faking his death at the end of season two, Sherlock returns two years later to deal with a new mystery as well as his long-suffering partner Watson’s understandable feelings of betrayal.

Star-Crossed (new) – CW – Mondays 8pm – Premieres 2/17
Aimee Teegarden and Matt Lanter star in this sci-fi version of Romeo & Juliet.

Suburgatory Season 3 – ABC – Wednesdays 8:30pm – Premieres 1/15

Tessa, having grown up in urban New York City, is trying to adapt to a mellower suburban life in this comedy starring Jane Levy.

Supernatural Season 9 Resumes – CW – Tuesdays 9pm – Premieres 1/14

Following the latest round of death and possession, the angeleic war kicks into high gear and Crowley returns to the action.

Switched at Birth Season 3 – ABC Family – Mondays 8pm – Premieres 1/13

Back for season 3, Bay must deal with Ty’s deployment and the Kennishes try to help Daphne from getting into major legal trouble.

Teen Wolf Season 4 – MTV – Mondays 10pm – Premieres 1/6
Funny and scary and sexy, this stuff isn’t just for young adults anymore. The critically acclaimed show you’re not watching is Teen Wolf and it’s starting up again now for an exciting fourth season.

True Detective (new) – HBO – Sundays 9pm – Premieres 1/12

Following the American Horror Story model of employing a different cast and plot for each potential season, the first season of True Detective stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Louisiana cops tracking down a serial killer, utilizing separate timelines.

Twisted Season 1 Resumes – ABC Family – Tuesdays 9pm – Premieres 2/11

The second part of the first season begins as Danny and Lacey deal with their actions all the while the cops are still looking into the murder of one student and Danny continues to be their prime suspect.

Vikings Season 2 – History – Sundays (Time TBD) – Premieres February 27, 2014

Ragnar Lothbrok and the Vikings have returned with more epic battles, where we see tensions between Ragar and his brother Rollo come to a (bloody) head.

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead Season 4 Resumes – AMC – Sundays 10pm – Premieres 2/9

Certified Fresh for each season, The Walking Dead will continue to focus on character development as the fourth season continues, while still terrifying the bejeebies out of us.
