Chris Weitz has ceded directorial duties on "His Dark Materials" trilogy, citing the inherent technical challenges associated with filming, Variety reports. Weitz, the director of "About a Boy," says he is not the right person to bring the first film, "The Golden Compass," to the screen. He also wrote the screenplay, which will still be filmed for New Line with a new director. The trilogy, written by Philip Pullman, includes "Compass," "The Subtle Knife," and "The Amber Spyglass." The story involves a young girl who encounters supernatural creatures during her sojourn to save her best friend.
