How has the God of Mischief grown over a decade of sinister tricks and foiled plans and even the occasional death in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? The man who plays him, Tom Hiddleston, sat down with Rotten Tomatoes for a deep dive to talk through just that. From learning he got the role of Loki in the original Thor – he initially auditioned to play the title character – and then stepping into his costume for the first time, all the way to the test screenings that ultimately saved his life after audiences reacted negatively to his Dark World death scene, it’s been a wild journey.

In this exclusive extended interview, Hiddleston reflects on Loki’s most important moments and his approach to the character, as well as how he has adapted that over the years. Plus, he talks about his connection with Chris Hemsworth, the complexity of playing a villain it’s hard not to love, and reveals what kind of Loki we can expect in the new Disney+ miniseries that bears his name.

Loki launches Wednesday, June 8, on Disney+.
