"The Guide" Reigns Supreme During Its Debut Weekend

The long-awaited movie version of Douglas Adams‘ "The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy" ended up in first place during its inaugural weekend, raking in a healthy (but not staggering) $21.7 million from just over 3,300 theaters. Hanging on in second place was last weekend’s "The Interpreter" which pulled in a fairly impressive $14.2m in its second weekend. Debuting in third place was …

the Ice Cube action thriller "xXx: State of the Union," which made a relatively disappointing $13.7m in over 3,800 theaters. Rounding out the Top 5 were "The Amityville Horror" with $8.1m ($55m total) and the Matthew McConaughey adventure flick "Sahara" with $6m ($57.1m total). Total box office is down from the same time last year, but that’s due to change once the Summer Movie Season gets started in full swing. Next week’s challengers are the horror remake "House of Wax," the Ridley Scott epic "Kingdom of Heaven," and the racially-charged drama "Crash."
