Ready for another great Marvel movie? Of course, you are! The Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t had a Rotten entry in all its 13 years and 24 feature films, and the latest looks to continue the franchise’s tradition. From the Hollywood premiere of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a handful of critics shared unanimous praise on social media for the story, action, performances, and more. Even some of the usually harsher reviewers were pleasantly surprised.
Here’s what critics are saying about Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings:
Shang-Chi is fantastic… Marvel has another hit on its hands.

– John Nguyen, Nerd Reactor
Shang-Chi is like no Marvel movie you’ve seen.
– Steve Weintraub, Collider
I liked Shang-Chi more than Black Widow. I said it.
– Kirsten Acuna, Insider
This movie hits all that Marvel does well (pacing, humor, character) and adds action like we’ve never seen from the MCU before!
– Brandon Davis, ComicBook.com
In many ways it feels like the least MCU movie of the MCU, and I think a lot of people will really love that. It’s a great standalone adventure/origin story.

It is exactly the shot in the arm that Marvel and Disney needed.
– Scott Mendelson, Forbes
This is the MCU back doing its thing on a high level again.
– Aaron Neuwirth, We Live Entertainment
Director Destin Daniel Cretton brought something so fresh to the MCU. So much style and heart.
– Brandon Davis, ComicBook.com
Love that it opens the door to a new world that I can’t wait to see more of.
– Steve Weintraub, Collider
I’m excited to see how Shang-Chi fits into the future of this cinematic universe.
– Peter Sciretta, Slashfilm
Phase 4 is magical and mystical and I’m here for it. If Shang-Chi is the direction the next phase of the MCU is heading, bring on Eternals and Doctor Strange 2.
– Kirsten Acuna, Insider
Never expected it to be THIS good… Can’t believe how much I loved this movie.
– John Campea, The John Campea Show
Didn’t expect to love it as much as I did!
– Dorian Parks, Geeks of Color
We are all pleasantly surprised.
– Scott Menzel, We Live Entertainment
Even I really liked it… I was so damn relieved.

Shang-Chi is a blast! Marvel delivers a wuxia/fantasy/superhero movie mash-up that’s a lot more fun than how the trailers have been selling it.
– Aaron Neuwirth, We Live Entertainment
I thought the trailers looked awful. This film delivers the goods.
– Scott Menzel, We Live Entertainment
It’s much better than the trailers (lots of goodies unspoiled) and is unafraid to be weird and fantastical.
– Scott Mendelson, Forbes
Wished the trailers didn’t give away two surprises in the film… but there’s so much in the film that isn’t in the Shang-Chi trailers that surprised me.
– Kirsten Acuna, Insider
Some of the very best action in the MCU.
– Drew Taylor, Collider
Shang-Chi has some of the best fight scenes of any MCU movie, sometimes thrilling, other times just stunningly beautiful.
– Peter Sciretta, Slashfilm
The action set pieces are STUNNERS. Choreography, cinematography, costume design, VFX – all on point and come together to make those fights MCU standouts.
– Perri Nemiroff, Collider
The action is just absurdly epic.
– Brandon Davis, ComicBook.com
The action scenes are simply spectacular, especially the train and skyscraper scene.
– Scott Menzel, We Live Entertainment
The filmmakers know how to capture the fight choreography with long takes and quick action. (No shaky cam!).
– John Nguyen, Nerd Reactor
Every fight scene/action sequence is better than the last.

The fighting is another level.
– Dorian Parks, Geeks of Color
Best martial arts I’ve seen in a long time.
– Scott Menzel, We Live Entertainment
It’s full of INCREDIBLE, beautifully choreographed fight scenes and full of badass women.
– Kirsten Acuna, Insider
Fight scenes are excellent and easy to follow.
– Steve Weintraub, Collider
Almost as good [as The Raid] but can’t beat an R rated film that has a hardcore stunt crew. With that said, this blows [away] any fight scenes in any MCU movie.
– John Nguyen, Nerd Reactor
Unexpectedly spiritual and emotionally complex.
– Drew Taylor, Collider
Come for the killer fight scenes, dark mysticism, and martial arts mayhem, but stay for the thoughtful rumination on family, grief, and legacy.
– Dan Casey, Nerdist
The family story is touching.
– John Nguyen, Nerd Reactor
Expected a simple father/son conflict narrative and it’s so much bigger than that. Shang-Chi is a beautiful story about family, loss, and how our grief can blind and destroy us.
– Kirsten Acuna, Insider
Shang-Chi is such a personal, family story at its core. That’s when it’s at its best.
– Brandon Davis, ComicBook.com
Shang-Chi is part Shakespearean family tragedy, part mythological epic, part martial arts masterpiece. It is f***ing awesome.

The whole cast is terrific! Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh are international treasures.

To see so many Asian actors in an MCU movie made me feel so proud and happy. #RepresentationMatters.
– Wendy Lee Szany, The Movie Couple
The movie’s myriad influences (everything from Jackie Chan to Hayao Miyazaki) pay off big time.
– Drew Taylor, Collider
All I can say negative about the movie as a whole is that the second half isn’t as good as the first half but it’s still solid.
– Scott Menzel, We Live Entertainment
The third act is full of surprises but sometimes is a little crazier than is needed.
– Brandon Davis, ComicBook.com
The post credits are funny and exciting and sets up the future of the MCU.
– John Nguyen, Nerd Reactor
The first after-the-credits scene is a great one.
– Steve Weintraub, Collider
The Shang-Chi crowd was the most enthusiastic I have been with since Endgame. Couldn’t hear some of the post credit scene dialogue due to cheering.
