With production underway in Germany, and a recently announced synopsis and full cast lineup, what could get you more excited about Quentin Tarantino‘s WWII pic Inglourious Basterds? How about the very first production image, featuring Brad Pitt on set as Tennessee hillbilly Lt. Aldo Raine??

Universal has released the first image from Inglourious Basterds, which is currently filming on location in Germany. Behold, Brad Pitt in character as Lt. Aldo Raines, the leader of the Nazi-scalping Jewish-American Army squad known as the “Basterds”!

So far, this is appears to be the only official image in release (we have confirmed with the studio that the “teaser” poster floating around the web is fan made and not official).

Based on the Enzo Castellari Italian war movie Inglorious Bastards, Tarantino’s Basterds follows a group of Jewish-American soldiers (including Pitt, B.J. Novak, and Eli Roth) behind enemy lines in Nazi-occupied France, a German actress and resistance fighter (Diane Kruger), and a young woman with her own agenda for vengeance (Melanie Laurent).

Inglourious Basterds is currently scheduled for a 2009 release.
