New on Hulu in July 2021

Bill & Ted Face the Music,American Horror Stories, Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar, Questlove's Summer of Soul, and more headed to Hulu in July.

Hulu isn’t slowing down its programming this July — in fact, there are plenty of new (and new-to-Hulu) headed to the streaming service this month. TV-wise, there’s the highly anticipated debut of American Horror Story spinoff American Horror Stories on FX on Hulu — what exactly that will entail is still a mystery, as is Ryan Murphy’s way — plus the entire series of ABC sitcom My Wife and Kids is available on streaming in honor of its 20th anniversary. Paul McCartney sits down for a wide-ranging interview in the docuseries McCartney 3, 2, 1, and other originals including The Mighty Ones and This Way Up debut their second seasons.

On the film side of things, Summer of Soul, Questlove’s documentary about a Harlem music festival held the same summer as Woodstock will debut in theaters and on Hulu, and recent releases including Bill & Ted Face the Music and Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar will debut on the streaming service throughout the month.

Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) (2021)

Description: In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary—part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Marcus Garvey Park. The footage was never seen and largely forgotten–until now. Summer of Soul shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present. The feature includes never-before-seen concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Ray Baretto, Abbey Lincoln & Max Roach and more. Summer of Soul premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award. Together with Disney’s new BIPOC creator initiative Onyx Collective, Searchlight Pictures will release it theatrically and it will also stream on Hulu.
