Here's everything we know about It Follows director David Robert Mitchell's sci-fi thriller.

David Robert Mitchell is back after an eight-year filmmaking hiatus with a new original film that has been shrouded in mystery from the moment it was greenlit to when it started filming, and with its release fast approaching. Originally known as an independent filmmaker whose first project was entitled The Myth of the American Sleepover (2010) and made on a $50,000 budget, he followed it up with his breakout hit It Follows in 2014, starring Maika Monroe and Keir Gilchrist, also made on a budget just shy of $1.5 million and praised for its innovative horror (with a sequel confirmed to begin production soon). Following this, Mitchell collaborated with Andrew Garfield to make a noir comedy in the form of 2018’s Under The Silver Lake, which, like his past few works, has gained a cult following.

Now, with the upcoming The End of Oak Street, David Robert Mitchell is entering uncharted territory with a budget of $85 million and an ambitious distributor behind it in the form of Warner Bros. and a production company in Bad Robot (run by J.J. Abrams). With a plot heavy on science fiction elements and mystery, the film’s anticipation is building upon word of mouth and the director’s ambitious vision.

However, the question still exists: What is The End of Oak Street about?

The most engaging and evoking feeling brought on by David Robert Mitchell’s upcoming film is how difficult it is to articulate, with little to no information regarding its plot, though there is a summary of what to know before going in.

Taking place on the titular road, the film focuses on a nuclear family, consisting of the mother Denise (portrayed by Anne Hathaway), the father Greg (portrayed by Ewan McGregor), and their two children Audrey (portrayed by Maisy Stella) and Brian (portrayed by Christian Convery), whose regular suburban neighborhood is seemingly transported to a mysterious place infested with dinosaurs and other creatures of prehistoric origin.

Rounding out the cast is Jordan Alexa Davis, P.J. Byrne, and Chris Coy.

In addition to the homage to Steven Spielberg works (specifically that of Jurassic Park), another mystery franchise that Mitchell is utilizing as inspiration for his upcoming film is that of Rod Serling’s series, The Twilight Zone, specifically regarding the obscure narrative and “science fiction” premise that is light on information regarding what the story is actually about.

With the involvement of J.J. Abrams and all the secrecy surrounding the movie’s story, fans have theorized there could be a surprise reveal of a connection to some other film or franchise in the same vein of the Cloverfield movies, but as this is an original script from Mitchell, all signs point to this being a standalone film.

As alluded to earlier, not much is known about David Robert Mitchell’s upcoming film. Originally announced to be in development in early 2023, the film was developed by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Jackson Pictures for Warner Bros., casting Anne Hathaway in a lead role that same year. Ewan McGregor joined next in early 2024, replacing Oscar Isacc, who dropped out of negotiations to co-star alongside Hathaway, and in March of the same year, the title was announced: Flowervale Street. The rest of the main cast joined soon thereafter, and in January of 2026, Warner Bros. revealed that the title would be changing, ultimately unveiling the new title, The End of Oak Street, with the debut of its first teaser in March of 2026.

Is There A Trailer?

Yes, and in fact, there are two trailers. The one above is the ominous teaser that was released all the way back in March of this year, announcing the film’s official new title.

The other is the more recent, plot-heavy trailer that gives away some more details regarding the thrills the audience will witness, and some context of what one should anticipate from Mitchell’s upcoming film.

When Will It Be Released?

Previously scheduled to release on May 15, 2025, and March 13, 2026 respectively, Mitchell’s film is slated for an August 14, 2026 theatrical release, with a planned IMAX rollout.

Part of what makes David Robert Mitchell’s upcoming film so engaging is just how shrouded in mystery it is. The science fiction elements are thrilling enough to captivate the audience, but leave just enough mystery to encourage the audience to seek out the film to see what the filmmaker (and the entire cast and crew) have created in a collaborative, talent-filled environment.

The End of Oak Street is slated to release on August 14, 2026, and whether or not the film itself meets the high expectations set up by the trailer and its mysterious promotional material remains to be seen.
