Christopher Nolan has been a fan-favorite filmmaker since the release of Memento in 2000, and his movies tend to be among the most highly anticipated, whether they’re twist-heavy thrillers, superhero blockbusters, or sci-fi spectaculars. His latest, Dunkirk, is unlike anything we’ve seen from him before. The World War II drama is his shortest feature since his debut, Following, but the excitement for the movie is as great as with any of his past efforts. And today we know how it measures up to its promise, as a number of critics and journalists who saw early screenings of the film were finally allowed to voice their opinions on social media.
First, here’s some more information you need to know about Dunkirk:
What it’s about: Simply put, the movie depicts the 1940 evacuation of more than 300,000 Allied soldiers from Dunkirk, France, where they had been surrounded by and continued to be attacked by the Germans. The events are seen from three different perspectives: by land, by sea, and by air.
Who is in it: Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, James D’Arcy, Fionn Whitehead, and Harry Styles.
How best to see it: IMAX 70mm all the way.
When it comes out: July 21.

DUNKIRK: intense! 3 intercutting stories on 3 time frames. Almost a silent film, w/ incredible score. May be divisive. I LOVED. See 70mm! pic.twitter.com/E6Xga21Skm

Dunkirk is thrilling, beautiful & a must in 70mm IMAX – but it's also hard to ignore that it has zero distinctive personalities/characters.
