Daisy Edgar-Jones Says Sense and Sensibility Will Offer “Something New”
In this episode of "Women in Focus Features", the star reveals what draws her to sensitive, strong women roles and which other Jane Austen film she adores.
As any Jane Austen fans know, the 1995 Sense and Sensibility adaptation is tough to beat. Even Daisy Edgar-Jones, the star of the newest Sense and Sensibility adaptation, admits, “I grew up loving the Ang Lee version of the film and Emma Thompson’s role as Elinor.” But, as she says in the latest episode of Rotten Tomatoes and Focus Features’ “Women in Focus Features,” her interpretation, helmed by director Georgia Oakley, will offer “something new.”
Edgar-Jones stars as Elinor Dashwood in the new take on the classic, a role she calls a career “highlight” — an impressive title given that she starred in the box office smash Twisters and the beloved miniseries Normal People. “I’ve always been attracted to women that are sensitive and strong-willed, but also deeply kind of internal,” the actor explains. “And I think she is somebody that feels a lot and just knows how to govern it. She’s often described as the sense in the film, and Marianne the sensibility, but actually I think what I love most about Elinor is that she’s full to the brim of sensibility, she’s just able to kind of control it.”
It makes sense, then, that when asked about her favorite female performances from Focus Features, she calls out Kiera Knightley’s work in Pride & Prejudice, another Austen adaptation. “I think her Elizabeth Bennet is a work of art,” she says. Her other favorites include Jessie Buckley in Hamnet and, of course, Inde Navarette in Obsession.
