Sabrina Carpenter is heading down the rabbit hole! The pop sensation is set to star in and produce a new Alice in Wonderland-inspired movie musical for Universal Pictures, and it’s shaping up to be a dream project for the singer-songwriter-turned-Hollywood triple threat.
Behind the camera is writer-director Lorene Scafaria, who will be at the forefront of the reimagining of Lewis Carroll’s beloved story. Scafaria’s recent work includes HBO’s new comedy I Love LA, which she executive produces, as well as acclaimed episodes of Succession. Her 2019 hit Hustlers scored rave reviews and earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Director.
Helping bring this whimsical world to life is producer Marc Platt, the powerhouse behind La La Land, Legally Blonde, and both the stage and screen versions of Wicked. He’s teaming up with Alloy Entertainment’s Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton, whose credits include fan favorites like Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars.
While plot details are still under wraps, sources say the film is a passion project for Carpenter, who just earned six Grammy nominations for her hit album Man’s Best Friend. Carpenter’s film and television credits include The Hate U Give, Emergency, Clouds, and Girl Meets World.
