The 200 Best Movies of the 2010s

Among the 200 best-reviewed movies of the 2010s, there’s something for everyone. You want a movie shot on gigantic 70mm IMAX cameras? Dare to Dunkirk! How about something captured on iPhones? Think Tangerine! Thinking, gee, you sure would like to see a new bona fide silent movie? You got your wish with The Artist! What about a movie that started filming even before this decade was a thing? Surely, you were there for the 12-years-in-the-making Boyhood. Then there were movies that just seemed impossible from the get-go: A Facebook movie? Something about LEGOs? Everything was possible in the 2010s!

Aside from Green Book, every Oscar Best Picture winner of the 2010s is featured here. And barring Jurassic World, Rogue One, and The Lion King, the 10 highest-grossing domestic films are represented. Not surprisingly, half of those box office champs are superhero movies, which had a banner decade (and not just because Marvel settled down with Mark Ruffalo) after a sizzling jumpstart in the late 2000s. Movies like Avengers, Endgame, Infinity War, Black Panther, and Incredibles 2 not only killed it with audiences, but critics as well.

In fact, it felt like the 2010s was the decade the niche and nerdy went full mainstream, not just with superheroes, but with renaissances in the horror and sci-fi genres. It seemed like every few months there was a new horror phenomenon that you just had to watch. Get Out, It Follows, The Babadook, Hereditary, and The Witch all gave shape and light to our nightmares. Meanwhile, the return of Star Wars underscored the dizzying, mind-blowing trips science-fiction took us on in the past 10 years, with an unusually strong crop of films like Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow, Ex Machina, Mad Max: Fury Road, Snowpiercer, Blade Runner 2049 and more.

With the barrier of cost to making a film decreasing thanks to continually improving consumer technology and more avenues of distribution, the 2010s also fostered previously under-served voices. Think of all the headlines Crazy Rich Asians, Moonlight, and Roma grabbed. Mexico had an especially strong decade with Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Guillermo del Toro winning five Best Director Oscars between them. Also, Keanu Reeves became cool again. How could you have not had a good time at the movies?

To put together this list, we first took every last Certified Fresh movie of the decade (all 1,700 of ’em) that had a theatrical release, including works like Roma and The Irishman. Then we cut out the bottom 1,500 using our Adjusted Tomatometer, a formula that takes into account several factors, including a movie’s year of release and number of reviews. Because we wanted to highlight equally the achievements of the top 200 films, we then ordered the list in alphabetical order. If you’re looking for cutthroat ranked lists, see our five genre lists! (Also, if you want to single out just this year, see our Best Movies of 2019.)
