Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård on Freely Creating the World of Wicker

The cast of Wicker discuss the experience of working on the raunchy romance film.

Writers and directors Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson’s film Wicker has been described as timeless by anyone who has seen it, especially those who worked on it. “It put sparkles on what I imagined,” star Olivia Colman said on the film’s design elements and overall look in an interview with Fandango. Alexander Skarsgård goes on to call the production a “fable,” adding that “it’s not set in a specific time or place, which gave all the departments such creative freedom.”

There was also freedom in developing characters. When it came to playing the perfect wicker husband, Skarsgård said how “intimidating it was to have no backstory,” but having a “pure and innocent” even “untainted, or affectionate” persona really allowed him to fill in the blanks. “There’s a lot of depth and sadness in the script,” yet the audience still needed to be excited by the comedy.

And then there’s the makeup. Eyelashes were the last step in his two-hour transformation, according to Skarsgård, but they were worthwhile in order to give the best, most authentic performance possible.
