Tim Burton is gearing up to turn his 1984 short film Frankenweenie into a full-length 3-D feature for Disney.

We first heard about Burton’s desire to update Frankenweenie last month, when word surfaced that it would be part of a two-picture deal with Disney that will also see Burton directing a 3-D Alice in Wonderland — but yesterday, Sci Fi Wire published a new interview with the director, in which he discusses the project in more depth.

New technology, as you might expect, played a role in Burton’s willingness to revisit the past. From the article:

We’re going to do that real low-budget…The thing that excites me about it and that will make it different is that when I look at my original drawings, there are certain things that are in those that I couldn’t get in the live action when I made the film. So I’m quite excited to try to get a certain emotion and other characters in the new version, and I want to make it a slightly bigger story.

The updated Frankenweenie is being targeted for a 2009 release.
