Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn makes a triumphant entry to the DCEU with The Suicide Squad, the reboot/sequel that has fans frothing in anticipation and critics showering praise on him like so much goo in… well, a James Gunn movie.

Ahead of the film’s release in theaters and on HBO Max this August, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Naz Perez sat down to talk in depth about the project with Gunn and his epic squad of actors, including returnees Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, and Jai Courtney, and newcomers Idris Elba, Daniela Melchior, David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Nathan Fillion, Flula Borg, Alice Braga, Mayling Ng, Juan Diego Botto, and Joaquín Cosio.

Gunn shares how Googling the stupidest comic book supervillains was one of the starting points for his script and why he wanted to give audiences a “crazy Harley, 100%, no apologies”; plus the cast talks about the genius of their writer/director and his unique and visceral vision, shooting some of the movie’s most intense (and wettest) action scenes, and which characters in the movie they geek out over. (Hint: The most popular choices either have plenty of dots or plenty of teeth.)

The Suicide Squad is in theaters and on HBO Max from Friday August 6, 2021.
