After five years in deep freeze, it looks as though The Onion Movie might be getting its chance to make audiences laugh.

They won’t be theatrical audiences — according to a report from Mashable (via Silicon Alley Insider), the film will be heading straight to DVD — but for those of us who long ago wrote off the project as permanently dead, this news still comes as something of a pleasant surprise.

Development on the sketch comedy film started in 2003, and it was targeted for a 2004 release — which obviously came and went. It’s been years since any news was leaked, and it’s anyone’s guess as to why Fox Searchlight settled on ’08; presumably, studio execs finally realized releasing it to DVD would be at least as cost-effective as letting the footage rot.
