“Good girl.” Halina Reijn’s critically-acclaimed erotic thriller Babygirl is now in theaters, and critics are praising Nicole Kidman’s standout performance of Romy as witty, edgy, and ferociously good. It has already earned her a 2025 Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture. RT’s Jacqueline Coley sat down with Kidman, Rejin, and co-star Harris Dickinson to talk about filming those steamy scenes and how their characters develop throughout the film.
Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: When we talk about Romy, she goes on such a journey in this [film]. I would say that her motivations don’t change throughout it but maybe how she feels about who she is as a person changes. I’d be curious if you could talk about that.
Nicole Kidman: She knows she’s in trouble inside, but she’s not sure what’s going on or why because she’s got the company, she’s at the height of her career, she’s got her goals, her marriage, yet there’s this restlessness and there’s this crisis, interior crisis, that’s percolating, so when he comes, she’s not sure what that means, and once they start the game, I think that’s when she’s just like, ‘I’m going to go with this,’ and then it takes over. And it’s not even choices, then; it’s more like it’s a calling. She’s being pulled, and she resists, and then she gets angry at herself, at him. And so it’s constantly in conflict, which, as an actor, is a fantastic thing to play.
