On DVD This Week: Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, XXX: Return of Xander Cage, and More

If you’re looking for a critically acclaimed new hit this week on DVD, you’re pretty much out of luck. But if you’re a fan of the Resident Evil series, the super-spy version of Vin Diesel, or space romance, then you’ll probably do alright. Read on for details on this week’s releases, which also include a choice from Criterion and re-releases from Arrow, Shout, and Universal.


xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017) 46%

Vin Diesel returns in the third chapter of the xXx franchise as super-spy Xander Cage, who comes out of retirement to retrieve a powerful weapon. The Blu-ray, also available in 4K, includes a gag reel and extended looks at the cast, the shooting locations, the stunts, and Diesel’s return to the series.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016) 38%

Milla Jovovich and Ali Larter reprise their roles in the latest (and ostensibly final) installment of the Resident Evil series, in which Alice and Claire must team up for an epic battle against the Umbrella Corporation. Special features include three featurettes, something called “Retaliation Mode,” and a sneak peek at Resident Evil: Vendetta, a 3D animated film related to the video games.

The Space Between Us (2017) 16%

Asa Butterfield and Britt Robertson star in this sci-fi drama about a boy born and raised on Mars who visit Earth and connects with a longtime pen pal. Extras include a commentary track, deleted scenes, a general interest featurette, and an alternate ending.

Ohayô (1959) 88%

– Criterion Collection

From Criterion, we have Japanese master Yasujiro Ozu’s understated comedy about two young brothers who refuse to speak at all until their father acquiesces and buys them a television. The new Blu-ray release comes with two silent films by Ozu from 1929 and 1932, a new video essay, and a new interview with film scholar David Bordwell.

  • Arrow Video is releasing a Blu-ray of  Pasquale Squitieri’s violent 1975 ‘poliziotteschi’ (Euro police thriller) The Climber, which stars Andy Warhol’s Factory alum Joe Dallesandro.
  • Shout Select is releasing a pair of Bruce Lee films — namely Game of Death and Return of the Dragon — in new collector’s edition Blu-rays.
  • Shout Select is also releasing a collector’s edition of Walter Hill’s genre-defying 1984 film Streets of Fire.
  • Universal is releasing “legacy collections” for two of their classic monsters: Dracula and the Mummy.
