Nicolas Cage Gets a Pair of "National Treasure 2" Costars

It racked up nearly $200 million at the box office, so a sequel was to be expected, but 2004’s "National Treasure" made its way onto few (if any) critics’ best-of lists, and a person could be forgiven for thinking that the upcoming "National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets" would be nothing more than a cash-in by Disney and star Nicolas Cage.

Not so fast. JoBlo.com reports that none other than Helen Mirren has signed on to play Cage’s mother, and will apparently help him learn more about his family’s connection to John Wilkes Booth, as well as something called the Knights of the Gold Circle.

"But wait," you might be saying. "Helen Mirren’s great and everything, but what about a bad guy?" — and Disney’s one step ahead of you, because a certain Ed Harris will be playing the villainous Jeb Wilkinson. Add in the returns of Justin Bartha, Diane Kruger, and Harvey Keitel, and this one’s looking less and less like direct-to-video fare every day.

"National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets" is scheduled for a December 17th release.
