Joan Allen, who you recently saw reprising her role as a CIA spook in The Bourne Ultimatum, is teaming up with Universal again for another action flick: Death Race. Allen will play the prison warden who coerces Jason Statham‘s character into the titular competition of doom.

Paul W.S. Anderson is directing this remake of Roger Corman‘s pulp masterpiece, Death Race 2000. Both films take place in a dystopic future where sadistic, ultraviolent car races have taken over as the national sport. Jason Statham stars as prisoner-cum-driver named Frakenstein, with Tyrese Gibson in the supporting role of Machine Gun Joe, and Ian McShane as a coach.

Production starts later this year, with Universal aiming for a late 2008 release date. Check out IGN’s video interview with Paul Anderson, who talks about his upcoming films, including Resident Evil: Extinction and Death Race.
