Friends, Seinfeld, The Office Voted Readers’ Favorite TV Comedies

Find out which TV comedy series Rotten Tomatoes users prefer in the results from our 2018 Fall TV Survey.

Instead of a drumroll, you’ll want to cue a very ’90s bassline for the reveal of Rotten Tomatoes readers’ favorite TV comedy of all time: Seinfeld.

Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer reigned supreme in the comedy section of RT’s annual fall TV survey of their TV viewing habits, with 9.01% of users saying that they prefer Seinfeld above all else. Close behind were Friends (cue the strategically timed handclaps), with 7.76% of the RT user vote, and The Office (cue the piano) with 7.22%.

Other shows that got between 4% and 7% of the RT user vote included The Big Bang Theory (6.16%), Parks and Recreation (5.28%), M*A*S*H (5.03%), and The Simpsons (4.40%). Among all total respondents (not just RT users), the Central Perk gang reigned supreme with 8.35%), followed by Seinfeld (7.87%), Big Bang (7.34%), The Office (6.61%), M*A*S*H (6.35%), I Love Lucy (4.59%), and Parks and Rec (4.35%).

Both gender and age had major impact on what comedies respondents loved. Significantly more women preferred Friends (11.33% of women vs. 5.22% of men), while men preferred Seinfeld (10.50% of men vs. 5.37% of women). Other gender splits of more than 1% included The Big Bang Theory (7.99% of women chose it vs. 6.66% of men), I Love Lucy (6.62% of women vs. 2.45% of men), The Simpsons (5.91% of men vs. 1.93% of women), The Golden Girls (4.45% of women vs. 1.57% of men), The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (3.52% of women vs. 1.78% of men), Cheers (3.55% of men vs. 1.83% of women), and Married…with Children (3.30% of men vs 1.67% of women).

As far as age goes, 12.37% of 18- to 34-year-old respondents preferred The Office, then Friends (10.87%), then Parks and Rec (8.89%). The 35- to 54-year-old respondents preferred Friends (9.98%), Seinfeld (9.61%), and The Big Bang Theory (8.97%). Among respondents 55 and older, M*A*S*H was far and away the favorite (12.91%), followed by The Big Bang Theory (9.87%), Seinfeld (9.00%), and I Love Lucy (8.50%).
