Add RoboCop to the List of Remakes

Excuse me, I have to go. Somewhere there is a crime happening.

We know the word is used increasingly often with regards to remakes, but in this case, “reboot” is wholly appropriate.

Ain’t It Cool News, reading through the latest press release from MGM, noticed something peculiar (and by “peculiar,” we mean “terribly disappointing”). Do you see what they saw?

MGM is planning an exciting fall and winter release schedule. In partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, MGM will bring new installments of two of its tentpole franchises — the new James Bond movie QUANTUM OF SOLACE and Steve Martin in PINK PANTHER 2. MGM will also release United Artists’ international thriller VALKYRIE, starring Tom Cruise on October 3. With the appointment of Parent, MGM will enter its new phase of evolution by focusing on its major movie franchises highlighted by JAMES BOND and PINK PANTHER sequels, THE HOBBIT, THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR 2, THE OUTER LIMITS, ROBOCOP, DEATH WISH and FAME, among others.

Yes, boys and girls, MGM is apparently planning to bring RoboCop out of mothballs. As AICN‘s Merrick so eloquently put it:

ROBOCOP!?!?!?!

Given that MGM is the source for this news, it seems safe to move it right past “rumor” status and into the “active development” circle — and just as safe to assume that, as Merrick notes, a 21st-century spin on the role that made Peter Weller famous would be light on the satirical edge that made the 1987 original such a treat. On the other hand, in a film climate that has already seen plans announced for a Rosemary’s Baby remake, exhuming RoboCop doesn’t seem like that much of a big deal.
