TV’s biggest night looked a little different this year, with host Jimmy Kimmel leading viewers through a socially-distanced 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony from the Staples Center, with some guest appearances – including a memorable and fiery moment with Jennifer Aniston – and live-crosses to the nominees.
Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek was the night’s big winner, cleaning up all seven awards in the Comedy category, including Outstanding Comedy Series. In the Limited Series categories, it was Watchmen‘s moment: the series took out Outstanding Limited Series, while stars Regina King and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II took home acting awards for Outstanding Lead Actress and Outstanding Supporting Actor, respectively. Uzo Aduba won supporting actress for her work on Mrs. America and Mark Ruffalo took home lead actor for HBO’s I Know This Much Is True.
Some of the biggest shocks of the night came in the lead acting categories for Drama, with Euphoria‘s Zendaya upsetting a field that included Olivia Colman and Laura Linney to take out Lead Actress in a Drama, and Succession‘s Jeremy Strong beating out co-star Brian Cox for Lead Actor. Succession also took out the award for Outstanding Drama Series, holding off closest competition, Ozark. (The Netflix series did land an award for Julia Garner, for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.)
