Peacock Original Shows and Movies Ranked by Tomatometer

Updated January 3, 2022

Following an early launch for Xfinity subscribers, NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service launched across the U.S. in July 2020 with more than 20,000 hours of premium content from networks and studios including NBC, Bravo, USA Network, SYFY, Oxygen, E!, CNBC, MSNBC, NBCSN, Golf Channel, Universal Kids, A&E, ABC, CBS, The CW, FOX, HISTORY, Nickelodeon, Showtime, Universal Pictures, DreamWorks, Focus Features, Illumination, ViacomCBS, Paramount, Lionsgate, Warner Bros. and Blumhouse. (See a list of titles.)

The service offers free, ad-supported access to most content, but its premium-tier subscription includes Peacock Originals series and movies, big stars, and animated fun. The launch featured: Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey), and Harry Lloyd (Game of Thrones) in sci-fi series Brave New World, an adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s dystopian novel; Holliday Grainger and Callum Turner in the Certified Fresh first season of espionage thriller The Capture; a Psych reunion with James Roday Rodriguez and Dulé Hill in Psych 2: Lassie Come Home; and animated series Curious George, Where’s Waldo?, and Cleopatra In Space.

Since then, Peacock has added a slew of acquired and International programming, as well as more home-grown original series like the 100% Certified Fresh British import We Are Lady Parts, well-reviewed Tina Fey-produced comedy Girls5eva, the single-camera Saved By the Bell revival/reboot and the well-reviewed first season of sitcom Rutherford Falls. The latest Fresh hit? The Certified Fresh podcast adaptation, Dr. Death, starring Joshua Jackson, Alec Baldwin, and Christian Slater.

Which shows and movies have earned their spot among the best Peacock offerings so far? While the service is still in its early stages, there are plenty of original shows and movies available — they just don’t all have scores yet. We’ve ranked the ones that do have scores below.

Want to know if your favorite television series is among the latest cancelled TV shows? Bookmark this page to learn about Netflix cancelled shows, when network series get the axe, and which cable TV limited series are being reworked as anthologies to squeeze every single drop of fan love out of them.

How it works: Renewals are obvious: new season = yay! When a network or streaming service announces that they’re not making another season of a show, however, we count that as cancelled (or “canceled” if you spell it without SEO considerations). Sure, some shows “come to a natural end,” but someone somewhere said “enough,” and to avoid endless discussions about whether a title was “cancelled” or “retired” — “Daredevil and Empire were cancelled, but Game of Thrones died peacefully of old age!” — we’re going with the one designation. Feel free to debate specific titles in the comments if you wish. But first, learn which series will live on, which have been resurrected — which is happening more and more frequently — and which have reached their expiration date.

HBO has announced a third season of its trippy fantasy series, His Dark Materials. However, fans of this adaptation of author Phillip Pullman’s work should note that this will be the last chapter in the series. The story focuses on Dafne Keen’s Lyra, an extremely brave young woman who happens to be from another world. Other cast members for the second season include Ruth Wilson, Amir Wilson, Ariyon Bakare, Andrew Scott, Will Keen, Ruta Gedmintas and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The show has a cumulative 80% Tomatometer for its first two seasons.

Buckle up, folks. Because HBO Max has cleared a second season of The Flight Attendant for takeoff. The psychological thriller stars Kaley Cuoco as Cassie Bowden, a globe-trotting flight attendant and party girl who gets an unwelcome surprise when she wakes up after a black-out night in a foreign country: The man she’d flirted with on the flight over (Michiel Huisman) is lying dead next to her. Now Cassie must solve the case before the feds — or the killer — find her. The first season is Certified Fresh with a 98% Tomatometer.

Brush off those lab coats. Peacock has renewed comedy A.P. Bio for a fourth season. The comedy, which aired on NBC for its first two seasons, stars Glenn Howerton as a former Harvard professor now relegated to teach high school biology (and make his students do his bidding). Other faculty members include Patton Oswalt as Principal Ralph Durbin and Paula Pell as his secretary, Helen Henry Demarcus. The first three seasons have a cumulative 88% Tomatometer.

Hulu has canceled the gritty horror/superhero series Marvel’s Helstrom after one season. The show, which has a 27% Tomatometer score, starred Tom Austen and Sydney Lemmon as Daimon and Ana Helstrom — the children of a serial killer who are also on the hunt for horrible people.

Netflix has set February 7 for the premiere of Locke and Key, the Carlton Cuse–produced adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s IDW comic book series that has been in development for more than a decade. The mystery series revolves around the Locke family, three siblings and their mother who move into their ancestral home – Keyhouse – after the murder of their father. Keyhouse, as the Lockes quickly discover, is filled with magical keys that hold special powers. That draws out a demon who wants to steal the keys, which may have played a role in the murder of the Locke paterfamilias. The series stars Darby Stanchfield (Scandal), Jackson Robert Scott (IT), and Connor Jessup (American Crime).

The Thirteenth Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) returns with the launch of season 12 on Wednesday, January 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT with friends Ryan (Tosin Cole), Yasmin (Mandip Gill) and Graham (Bradley Walsh). Subsequent episodes will air Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT beginning January 5 on BBC America. The season kicks off with a two-part episode entitled “Spyfall.”

Last season on The Magicians, magic was saved, but at a terrible cost: Quentin Coldwater died heroically to save his friends — and the world. Julia (Stella Maeve), Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley), Eliot (Hale Appleman), Margo (Summer Bishil), Penny (Arjun Gupta), and their friends (and frenemies) must learn to navigate a world without him. In season 5, premiering January 15 at 10 p.m. ET/9C, a new threat has arisen: in freeing magic, the balance tipped the other way and there’s too damn much of it. As the excess builds, an apocalypse looms.

Cantankerous Larry David returns for season 10 of his HBO drama in January. Vince Vaughn joins the fun in a multi-episode arc.

Better Call Saul will return with a two-night premiere event on February 23 and 24, 2020. The fifth season will premiere on Sunday, February 23 at 10 p.m. ET/9C following a new episode of The Walking Dead. The season will continue the next night, Monday, February 24, with an encore presentation of the season premiere at 8 p.m. ET/7C followed by the season’s second episode at 9 p.m. ET/8C. Subsequent episodes will air Monday nights at 9 p.m. ET/8C. The new season will find Bob Odenkirk’s Jimmy McGill finally embracing his Saul Goodman persona to practice law, and the fallout that ensues for everyone around him, including fellow attorney and girlfriend Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn), fixer Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks), meth kingpin/restauranteur Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito), and Jimmy’s criminal associate Nacho Varga (Michael Mando).

Find out when the rest of your favorite shows return and new shows premiere below.

Update (12/12): Pavarotti (Dec. 30), Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Jan. 24), Next in Fashion (Jan. 29), Briarpatch (Feb. 6), The Sinner (Feb. 6), Interrogation (Feb. 6), Wrong Man (Feb. 9), Hillary (Mar. 6), Ride with Norman Reedus (Mar. 8); Messiah (Jan. 1)

Also: Renewed & Cancelled

It’s been a month since Apple TV+ launched – just ahead of rival Disney+ – and began to make its case for why you should subscribe to the tech company’s streaming service. How successful has the case been? That’s what we’re looking at in this episode of Couch Tomatoes.

We’ve now had time for Apple’s big launch shows – The Morning ShowSeeDickinsonFor All Mankind – to hit their strides, and we’ve just been hit with the service’s most critically acclaimed series yet in M. Night Shyamalan’s super-creepy Servant. Couch Tomatoes host Naz Perez is digging into each series with TV hosts Heather Gardner and Jackie Iadonisi, and IndieWire TV critic Ben Travers. Has The Morning Show delivered on the prestige TV promise of its cast and creators? Is Dickinson the modern-period mashup we’ve been waiting for? And does Servant serve up the Shyamalan scares fans are hoping for? We’ll tackle all those questions, as well as share what’s on the horizon for the streaming service.

Plus, with each episode of Couch Tomatoes, we dig into a major series or event and provide Fresh picks of great shows to help you cut through the clutter and only binge the best.

Apple TV+ is now available.

Sure, some shows “come to a natural end,” but someone somewhere said “enough,” and to avoid endless discussions about whether a title was “cancelled” or “retired” — “Daredevil was cancelled and Empire is cancelled, but Game of Thrones died peacefully of old age!” — we’re going with the one designation. Feel free to debate specific titles in the comments if you wish, but first, learn which series will live on, which have been resurrected — which is happening more and more frequently — and which have reached their expiration date.

Another renewal ahead of a debut: Apple TV+ has renewed M. Night Shyamalan’s Servant for a second season, Shyamalan revealed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Lauren Ambrose, Toby Kebbell, Rupert Grint, and Nell Tiger Free star in the psychological thriller, which follows a Philadelphia couple in mourning after an unspeakable tragedy creates a rift in their marriage and opens the door for a mysterious force to enter their home. The series joins Apple Originals Dickinson, For All MankindSee, and The Morning Show, which received second-season orders.

Amazon has renewed The Lord of the Rings for season 2, while season 1 is still early in pre-production in New Zealand, Deadline reported. Season 1 will have a break in filming so that the writers room can reassemble to write season 2 scripts, which may allow simultaneous or back-to-back filming of seasons 1 and 2. The series is expected in 2021.

Marvel’s Runaways is the latest series developed under Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb to get the axe. Loeb is expected to announce his exit before the Thanksgiving holiday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. All 1o episodes of the young superhero series’ third season will drop on Hulu on December 13.

It’s official: The Mandalorian season 2 is underway. Earlier this year, series creator Jon Favreau revealed that he was working on season 2 scripts, but, as any film or TV writer can tell you, a script does not equal a green light. In a post on Instagram, Favreau sent “Greetings from the set of #TheMandalorian season 2,” which is enough proof for us.

Leave it to magical monster hunter Geralt of Rivia to find a way to return before he’s even arrived. Netflix has renewed fantasy series The Witcher for season 2 ahead of its premiere. Henry Cavill stars as the titular adventurer in the series that launches on December 20. The series, based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels and short stories, also stars Freya Allan as Ciri and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer. Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (Daredevil) is showrunner on the title, which will likely find an audience with gamers thanks to CD Projekt Red’s enormously popular and critically-acclaimed video game series based on the character.

Ever since Jason Momoa (Aquaman) played fictional warrior chieftain Khal Drogo, leader of a tribe of 40,000 Dothraki horsemen on Game of Thrones, the actor has used his clout to tell stories of Native American tribes — in modern day on the series The Red Road or movie Road to Paloma, or in a historical setting on Netflix series Frontier.

His Apple TV+ series See is set 600 years from today, and the tribes that exist in this fictional future have lived through a global pandemic that decimated humankind and left survivors blind. Despite the differences between See’s tribes and Native American tribes, Momoa saw parallels.

Take an in-depth look at See with these seven these things we learned about the series from Momoa, other cast members, and director Francis Lawrence.

1. THE TRIBES OF THE OLD WEST ARE REBORN ON SEE

Momoa confirmed that it’s no coincidence the survivors of See divided into tribes. He said See creator Steven Knight conceived the tribes like a classic Western.

When I first talked to Steven Knight, he is really, really fascinated with all the Native American cultures, like all the tribes,” Momoa told Rotten Tomatoes. “He really wanted to make a Western almost in the sense of having Comanches, Apaches, and all the different types of tribes like the Payans and the Alkenny.”

Momoa’s Baba Voss is a warrior of the Alkenny tribe, which is subject to oppression by the rulers of the Payan kingdom.

“I think it stems out to all different types of tribes and not just to the Native [American] culture,” Momoa continued. “I think we cross over a lot of things in this. Just by eliminating vision, you’re eliminating racism. You’re eliminating color and you can sense a lot more evil than good when you’re down to senses smell, touch, and feel.”

2. THE ALKENNY TRIBE REFLECTS THEIR LAND

See stars Jason Momoa (Apple TV+)

The Alkenny live in the mountains high above other tribes. They’ve set up rope trails in the woods along the hills and rock barricades to keep other tribes out. The land they inhabit speaks volumes about the character of the Alkenny, even though they never mention it.

Lawrence, who directed the last three Hunger Games movies, directed the first three episodes of See, and established the world of the show. Lawrence said he and Knight decided where the tribes came from first and that determined their tribal aspects.

“Most of the decisions that we made for any given tribe were where they were geographically, and starting to think about how they might live and what they might have at their disposal based on geography,” Lawrence said. “So the Alkenny at the beginning of the show is a mountain tribe, and so everything we sort of designed for them was just based really on geography.”

Voss is the Alkenny’s military leader. Paris (Alfre Woodard) is a more peaceful Alkenny elder. Woodard said if you stick with See, you’ll see that not all tribes are as culturally evolved as the Alkenny.

“We’d like to think that we are the most civilized, enlightened, highly developed,” Woodard said. “Some of the other tribes that you’re going to meet if you watch all the way through the eight episodes — people are making love, making war, having babies, doing life.”

3. THE PAYANS RULE WITH AN IRON, AND ELECTRIC, FIST

Season 1 | Episode 1 Sylvia Hoeks in “See,” premiering November 1 on Apple TV+.

Sylvia Hoeks plays Queen Kane, ruler of the Payan kingdom, which has electricity, and she lords over the other tribes.

“She uses the turbines as gods’ voices,” Hoeks said. “In episode 2, one of the lords tells me the gods now only sing with two voices. That means that one turbine is broken and that means that she is losing power. So her way of ruling is very much by distance. People shouldn’t come near, because then they’ll feel how emotional she really is and how vulnerable she really is.”

Viewers can see the differences between the industrial Payan world and the natural Alkenny world. Kane is also so paranoid, she’s installed noisemakers in every room so she can always hear if someone is coming.

If other tribes want access to her electricity, they have to pay. Tamacti Jun, played by Christian Camargo, is the Royal Tax Collector and Witchfinder General who collects for Kane.

“This is sort of the largest of the ruling class really, her and the Payans,” Camargo said. “There’s not that many people on the planet in this story. I think the total is two million in the whole world left, after this virus sweeps through. So these monarchies are very powerful, because there’s a limited supply of humans. And they’re all very dependent on her because she runs the energy, the God flame, the power. So it’s extremely manipulative, in a way.”

5. A BLIND MAN TAUGHT THE SEE ACTORS HOW NOT TO SEE

See stars Hera Hilmar and Jason Momoa (Apple TV+)

Joseph A. Strechay was See’s blindness consultant for the sighted actors. Lawrence said in a press conference that many of the cast members had to break sighted habits, like nodding when someone else talks, because blind people wouldn’t nod to other blind people.

Hera Hilmar, who plays Voss’s wife Maghra, copped to nodding.

“I definitely once nodded,” Hilmar said. “I feel like maybe there’s a sort of slight going into a nod that might be in the show. Maybe that lives still in our muscle memory 600 years from now up to a point.”

Even Momoa struggled to unlearn sighted habits.

“I got called out a lot,” Momoa said. “Hera’s really good. It’s tough because you can see when you focus and you know it. You can’t focus in on anything. You literally have to see this and this has to all go fuzzy. You have to take it all in and you can’t really be in one spot.”

6. TWO ALKENNY CAN SEE, BUT IT’S A SECRET

Kofun (Archie Madekwe) and his sister Haniwa can see in See (Apple TV+)

It has been 600 years since anyone could see, so when Kofun (Archie Madekwe) and Haniwa (Nesta Cooper) are born with sight, they keep it secret. Voss keeps their secret too, fearing how people like Kane might use them if she knew they could see.

“The Alkenny are more of a hidden tribe,” Cooper said. “They don’t really go out and mesh with the other tribes or villages in the area. They’re very, very rooted in their culture and their customs and rituals. They’re also a very religious tribe as well.”

Madekwe added, “The appreciation as well for those customs and rituals and that idea of community and stuff, that’s what my character has learned to hold most dear to him. That’s where Kofun and me were different.”

You might never see it on the show, but Cooper thought about what Haniwa’s childhood might have been like. Even if she could see, she’d have to play with friends who couldn’t and couldn’t know she could see.

“When we went through I blindness training, we all were like, ‘OK, what kind of games do you think we played when we were younger? What were songs that we sang that our mother sang to us when we were sad? What happens when a person passes away in the Alkenny?’” Cooper speculated. “These are all things that we all were trying to figure out together.”

7. THE ALKENNY ARE NOT ALONE IN THE WOODS

Jason Momoa in See (Apple TV+)

The premiere of See showed what a formidable force the Alkenny are in battle, fending off an enemy tribe. It’s not only invaders who threaten the Alkenny. There are still all the dangers of the forest, as Voss finds out when he has to stand his ground against a bear.

“I had to get off of work and then go train with bear many times. He’s very cute and cozy: ‘Come here, brother,’” Momoa said with a bear-cuddling gesture. “It was amazing. He’s huge. He’s nine-foot tall when he stands on his feet, hind legs.”

If anyone in the insurance department is reading this, Lawrence was adamant that Momoa did not actually wrestle the bear.

“No, Jason could not actually touch the bear,” Lawrence said. “The trainer could touch the bear. The bear was actually quite friendly, which made filming that sequence much more difficult than I wanted it to be, because the bear was a little lazy, a little grumpy, and sort of friendly. So it made it hard for it to look as aggressive as I wanted.”

Four episodes of See are now available on Apple TV+.
