Metal Gear Solid Movie Adaptation in the Works at Sony

The filmmaker duo behind 'Final Destination: Bloodlines' are set to create new projects across Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation.

Sony has locked in two of Hollywood’s fastest‑rising filmmakers. Just a year after Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein were preparing to release their first major studio feature, Final Destination: Bloodlines, the duo has signed a sweeping first‑look deal covering all of Sony Pictures’ film labels.

Under the pact, their new company Wonderlab will develop films for them to direct as well as original projects they’ll produce for other filmmakers.

As part of the deal, Lipovsky and Stein will direct Columbia Pictures’ long‑awaited Metal Gear Solid adaptation, marking the first time Hideo Kojima’s iconic stealth‑action game will be brought to the screen. Avi Arad and Ari Arad are producing. The duo called the game “a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece” and said they are honored to bring its world to life.

The agreement deepens their existing relationship with Sony, where they are already directing an animated Venom movie for Sony Pictures Animation and developing The Earthling, an original sci‑fi epic for Columbia Pictures produced alongside Eric Heisserer and Scott Glassgold.

Their rapid rise follows the success of Final Destination: Bloodlines, which revitalized the dormant franchise and grossed $317 million worldwide on a $50 million budget. Before that, they broke out with their indie sci‑fi thriller Freaks, and they are now in post‑production on its sequel.

Over the past year, the duo has also worked across multiple studios, including a new Gremlins film for Warner Bros., Long Lost with Amblin and Universal, and The Traveler at Paramount.
