Director Craig Gillespie offered his stars a lot of freedom to experiment on the set of Supergirl, the latest big-screen entry in the DC Universe, and Jason Momoa in particular appreciated that.

“I’m trying to find [the character of Lobo] too. I just have a wealth of knowledge from the comics and obviously the script to work with, but then after that, I’m just trying to stay as free as possible,” Momoa explained during Fandango’s Big Ticket interview, sitting next to Gillespie and co-stars Eve Ridley and Milly Alcock, aka Supergirl herself. “We kind of just get to see what we do in looping — most of mine’s action — and I got to see some of the stuff. And I was really surprised to see how much Craig kept in there, because a lot of times, you’ll get loose, and you’re like, ‘That’ll never be in there.'”

Turning to Alcock, he continued, “And we have our moments. There’s some messed up things we did! There are some things that we did where I’m like, ‘Oh my god, if that makes it in there… Can it be in there? Can it not? It’s good it didn’t make it.’ Regardless, we went there, and it was led by [Craig], so I was really happy when I was in looping to go, ‘Wow, they left all that in there.'”

Gillespie explained that the same creative freedom is what made Matthias Shoenaerts’ performance as the villain Krem so exciting. “He was so courageous. He would give me 1-10 in terms of variations and had that trust to say ‘Let’s try and figure out in the edit.’ And we would narrow it down, but he would be bonkers at times, in the best way.”

Check out the full Big Ticket interview above to see Milly Alcock talk about what it was like to act alongside a digitally created dog, Eve Ridley offer her take on the relationship between Supergirl and her own character Ruthye, and Jason Momoa reveal the advice he got from a Marvel star about approaching the role of Lobo.
