Girls Character Guide: Catch Up With the Series Before the Final Season Begins
Find out where we left off with Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, Shoshanna, and the rest of the gang from the hit HBO series
Over five seasons, the girls in HBO’s Girls have grown from aimless twentysomethings to (allegedly) fully grown adults. And now Girls must close this chapter and face its final season — otherwise, they’d have to rename the series to Women. To help prepare you to say goodbye to Hannah Horvath and her pals, here’s a guide to where each of the major players left off in the season 5 finale.
Girls season 6 premieres Sunday, February 12 at 10 p.m. on HBO
(Lena Dunham)
The aspiring voice of her generation has quite possibly grown the most from seasons 1 to 6. She’s gone from living off the generosity of her parents and half-assedly trying to become a writer to attending the prestigious Iowa Writers’ Workshop to working as a New York City school teacher. Her on-and-off relationship with actor boyfriend Adam is permanently off now that he’s dating her BFF Jessa. After breaking up with her teacher boyfriend Fran, Hannah made peace with Adam and Jessa and decided to dedicate herself to writing again.
(Allison Williams)
Everyone could see that Marnie’s marriage to her bandmate Desi was a bad decision, but it took an encounter with her old flame Charlie for her to realize that she and Desi were better off as partners in music only. And, at the end of season 5, she finally gave in to her true feelings for Ray before embarking on a tour with Desi.
(Jemima Kirke)
Rehab did wonders for Jessa, who has been able to hold a job and even begun a real, semi-healthy relationship — with Hannah’s ex, Adam. It’s her recovery that brought them together after their chemistry sparked in an AA meeting. In the season 5 finale, they had a violent fight in which Jessa confessed that she’ll never forgive Adam for breaking up her friendship with Hannah, but the couple managed to make up before the end of the episode.
(Zosia Mamet)
After a post-grad stint working in Japan, Shosh headed back to Brooklyn and came up with a genius marketing plan to help the struggling Ray’s Coffee Shop: They’ll switch strategies from every other hipster-friendly Brooklyn coffee shop and cater to the anti-hipsters. Genius!
(Adam Driver)
No one could actually call Adam and Jessa’s relationship healthy, but it might be better for both of them than their previous relationships. They’ve even been co-parenting Adam’s niece together. Adam’s acting career is in its beginning stages, but it’s successful so far.
(Alex Karpovsky)
Ever the gentleman, Ray stood by and watched while the love of his life, Marnie, married some-one else. But his patience paid off, because Marnie eventually came to her senses and acknowledged her true feelings for Ray. While his coffee shop might not be performing well at the moment, hopefully Shoshanna’s new marketing strategy will boost business.
(Andrew Rannells)
Hannah’s college ex-boyfriend-turned-gay BFF sparked a relationship with a handsome, well-known actor named Dill — but was rejected when he tried to make their relationship exclusive. At the end of the season, he banded together with Hannah’s mother to encourage their girl to par-ticipate in the Moth Story Slam and get her writing again.
(Ebon Moss-Bachrach)
For whatever reason, Marnie believed that her bandmate Desi, who cheated on his girlfriend with her, would be a good person to marry. But after becoming fed up with his immature, self-indulgent behavior, they ended their romantic relationship. They’re still bandmates, though, and together headed out on tour (where he immediately slept with a fan).
