The Haunting of Hill House (Netflix)

Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House has hooked fans and shaken them to their cores since its October 12 premiere. The Netflix series has earned praise – it’s currently Certified Fresh at 91% on the Tomatometer – for its depictions of grief and family trauma, but critics are also celebrating Hill House for the performances of its cast.

Horror fans might have noted that several cast members have starred in Flanagan’s previous films, including Hush, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Oculus, and most recently Gerald’s Game. It’s easy to assume that the series’ younger stars are new to the screen, but Lulu Wilson (who plays young Shirley Crain here) is experienced in the genre, especially for someone her age, while Victoria Pedretti, whose character experiences one of the most shocking and disturbing twists of the season, is a relative newcomer.
